no it will not give backlink, because search engine bots cannot able to visit profile pages if it is denied for non members.

Not at a waste at all. Just because it is a new page and has no PR doesn't mean that it wont help you. These are just the same as Angela and Pauls links and they have most definately helped my rankings.

However, it looks like the majority of these sites don't allow you to view member profiles unless you are logged in. Good try though.

If so they are worthless. Profiles that can't be crawled by google's bot are of no use

Have you checked that are those actually closed from bots also? For example with many, many forums profiles are locked from anonymous visitor but GoogleBot can still crawl/view them. So if you create profile with link, link gets still indexed.

Well, there's few ways. You can either spoof browser's useragent to GoogleBot one or you can query Google with forum's profile url without user id and checked cached version. Querying Google is more reliable because we have noticed with SEOBDB that some forums use more than 1 validation method for bots so useragent doesn't always work.

I mean with forums you will receive more than one link from the website if you post multiple times on the forum, where as with a article directory or link directory you will only receive only one link;

Besides, the link within the forum is one-way which is definitely more valuable than a reciprocal link.

These circumstances are assuming that NOFOLLOW links has been disabled.

To pass link juice or not to pass? That is the question!

I personally think that a profile link is as useful as a 3 legged horse. Usually (when I feel like backlinking), I choose a blog or a forum that I love, where the signature or the links inside the post are dofollow. For these type of sites that I love I don't really care about the PR rank of the page. (always differentiate between rank of domain and of a page.) Otherwise, if you are looking to backlink on a forum, look at the PR of the post page, since that will be your PR link.

This forum has a PR 5, but this post page(1) has a PR 0. Does the juice follow to this post? Maybe ! Maybe a little! Maybe not!
