I was just googling around in regards to NoFollow and i was getting to a SEO blog which URL i *certainly* wont post here. The webmaster recommends to set all comments on wordpress to "nofollow". I told him that this is extremely egoistical and i would never turn my own blogs to "nofollow" since the site visitors are the ones enriching my BLOG and i am thankful for it! I as webmaster profit from them since they provide content and life on my blog(s) or forum. Such SEOs and webmasters are paranoid about PR and their "holy" status of their blogs and they rather bow down to Google, scared they might lose some PR and, in a certain way, threat their site visitors very badly. If SPAM is a problem, epecially for wordpress there are zillion ways to prevent spam WITHOUT the need to turn all links into NoFollow! The webmaster on that particular blog was even THAT egoistical and concerned about his holy page rank FOR GOOGLE that he not only nofollowed all links, he actually disabled them so none of the links was even clickable even if the comment box actually had a field for entering "your website". God such people really **** me off... Rant over... |

Since Akismet, the whole nofollow thing is just stupid. Akismet is so good at catching spam thesedays, what's the point nofollowing comment links? The people have taken the time to come, read and comment on the blog, surely as a courtesy they should benefit a little from their comment. What a plonker that guy is. |

His loss. Technotard bloggers... used to be an oxymoron, but now that anyone/everyone can put up a blog with a tech knowledge base that's like rubbing two sticks together to start a fire, this is what you get. And the funniest part is that outbound links (especially to authority sites) from your own actually help your rankings at Google. D'oh! |

No Follow has changed now with the way it affects PR but before that the Webmaster would be right to no-follow links that he doesn't qualify first. PR will still leak through a no-follow link but it says that the website doesn't vouch for that link. Matt Cutts has hinted that quality external links help your site, so I would think that having a poor out-linking footprint would harm your site, even if just a little. Some of the algorithms that Google has aquired in the past include using external links to qualify a website as an authority of a subject. Linking to any random site may therefore remove some of the authority you have earnt on a subject. This is trying to know what the current algorithms do though which is near impossible. Whether a comment is set to no-follow or not shouldn't affect an honest commenter who is there to contribute to the community. It will keep some of the spammers away though. |
