Matt Cutts has just released a new Q&A video for question asked in December. Here's the question and answers in summarized and text format.

1. Does links from social media like FB, twitter matters? (how much does it matters compared to traditional links)

The short answer is "we treat all links the same", we look at PR of the backlinks and reputation. It doesn't matter where it comes from, .gov or .edu.

But links from FB might not pass any juice because it's a private page so Google can't fetch them and most links from twitter are no follow.

Facebook fan pages are indexed and links there do show up. I thought that at one point as well, someone on this board showed me a few search results with FB fan pages showing up. In fact my company FB fan page shows up on the first page of our search results, so I know Google can index it.

The way I read things, friend pages and fan pages are different animals. Users can select to have friend pages viewable only by friends, which makes them at least semi-private. Fan pages are open to all, hence they get indexed.

I could be wrong, though, it's happened a couple of times now...

Part of Matt's job is to gently lead people in the wrong direction. So while this may or may not be true, his saying it is irrelevant.

What Cutts says is true, from a certain point of view. Cutts is speaking to TRUE webmasters/developers, not spammers or IMers.

BTW, does anyone else find it ironic that Matt is in charge of Google's spam department and his name is Matt Cutts?

Social media links are important. It shows that your blog or site has been voted on by a human community and is not just getting links from a farm

He said in a video that "misleading" was part of his job... so if what he says is broadly true, I stand by my statement. (unless that video was being misleading).

What interested me in that video was he says that .gov and .edu do not hold any more weight than a .com - i.e; all sites are treated equal..

I had always though the opposite.. what do you guys think?

.edu and .gov have more authority based on the content and the reference material of the site. People naturally link to them and link to them a lot. It has nothing to do with the extension. They are also linked to from other authority sites.

The extension can be seen as an indicator, not a cause.
