Default SEO Myths and Intersting Facts

( This according to observations and stats on some of my own sites )

*) If a niche has a lot competition its impossible to rank a site for a keyword?

I examined a site of mine which is slowly climbing up in SERPs, #1 for a long tail KW and going towards #1 for the main keyword. According to market samurai it would be very hard to rank, like 600k competing sites and 170k competing sites with KW in title. SEO competition analysis also shows many established sites. But i still managed to rank it and i am getting good traffic. The worst thing you can do is NOT to try to rank. Time is always in your favor....the rest is math and consistency

*) A site needs constantly updated content?

In certain niches there is only so much you can churn out in regards to a subject. You cant publish 100s of articles on your site all revolving around "teeth grinding" or how tea trea oil is good for dandruff. Surely would get a little redundant.
In fact, i have some sites where i have content on there but then stopped supplying new articles, those sites are NOT constantly updated. One of the sites is #1 in Google in a health niche.

*) Its all about the number of backlinks?

Possible. Possibly not. I have seen sites ranking very well for fantastic keywords with less than 20 backlinks.

*) Then it must be all about quality of links?

Possible. Possibly not. Because i have ALSO seen sites ranking extremely well for certain keywords which have 40.000 of backlinks instead of 20, contradicting the above.

Leads to believe that quantity can indeed compensate for lower quality links.

*) It's always about relevancy?

Actually, not always. Google "Acne". Look at entry #3. They rank for acne and have nothing to do pimples or how to get rid of them. They sell clothes under their brand "acne". It's whats google calls "branding", a way to give a ranking preference to sites.

Good observations.

In terms of relevancy, if you're looking for "acne" (pimple) Yahoo is the best. But Google appears trying to cater for other search intent hence we see brand name sites and even a company named Acne web site.

But if we type "acne treatment" then we'll get relevancy in all results for the 1st Google serp.

Yes I agree with you especially that a site needs constantly updated contents. Take a look at people who rely on adsense sites for their income and have hundreds of small sites with one or two pages. These pages never get updated and they still rank pretty well.
