What's the best way to get a higher ranking than a local company that has bigger connections- i.e. is linked to high ranking sites like universities, chambers of commerce, local charities etc? I know one of the answers is to try to get those types of links yourself (not that easy). But does quantity ever beat quality? If a company has been around forever and has some top quality links can it be beat? (they are in a no. one spot for a good local keyword) |

It's not easy to beat them, especially because most of them hiding their backlinks, so you can't see where they all are linked.

You answered your own question. There are niches where you will NOT be able to out compete your competition. It's really that simple. Search is constantly chaning, links are not the end all to ranking. You could read all the Chess Books in the world and you'll never beat Garry Kasparov You have to know what battles you can win and where to best spend your resources. |

There are simply some markets in which you will not be able to outrank your competition.
