Default If you had to do SEO for Amazon.com

What would you do? When there's a brand involved that has to maintain its reputation, what would you do for SEO? I'm not talking about Amazon.com really, just any brand that has to maintain credibility. Would you still be writing articles? Would you still be social bookmarking? Would you still be backlinking from web 2.0 profiles? Curious what people would do for something like this.

I've done web marketing for a few global brands in my time including Guinness, Smirnoff, Stella Artois, Red Bull and a few others.

There's a few key areas that you have to cover and make sure it all ties into the campaign.. press releases, bloggers, forum posts (sometimes PPC) all connect to the wider marketing strategy. It's not really about targetting keywords but improving brand visibility and getting people to talk about the brand.

This is what I was thinking really myself, get people to talk about the brand and the linking will do itself (or the SEO).

Yeap.

One idea that is going to really catch on in the near future is encouraging joe-public to copy adverts, getting folks to make their own versions.

These big corps know that the word of regular people like you and me is much more powerful than anything they can say through their marketing material. Imitation is the highest form of flattery, as they say.

What do you mean copying though? Like the average person just copying advertisements and then what? Not sure I follow but I'm definitely interested.

I'll try to find some examples for you Andrew. When a company makes a TV advert and it inspires normal folks to make their own version for Youtube, it's the holy grail of marketing because clips like these can easily go viral.

If big companies started releasing clips from their commercials to the public to edit and upload to YouTube themselves - that would be phenomenal. With the ease of editing now for people on Windows or a Mac (Windows Movie Maker and iMovie) I could see a lot of amazing creativity with the footage at hand, and then the amount of ads out there for 1 single product. Wow.

MJ you are on to something.

I know you're meaning things more like those CG baby commercials that are now being re-edited to different music and stuff. But the ability to get a whack of footage for a commercial, and edit your own for a product... wow.

I wonder if we'll ever see that.

Offline Linkbait!

You biggest opportunity here is to make viral news stories. When there is a tragic story about someone losing their house, arrange a team to build a new one, donate to haiti or build a school for females in Africa.

You can also do stunts like betting you would walk a long distance if your favorite team loses. You will first get the media when you make the bet, and then if you lose you get media coverage when you do the walk. This is only an idea that has been used several times.

For direct backlinking I would help my visitors to make backlinks. Affiliate links atleast make traffic. I would also develope a "Look what I bought" button that people could click when they buy a new cell phone or camera and share on facebook, twitter and other social sites.

Make commercial videoes or viral videoes and post it on all the video sites.

Build excessive profile pages on the different sites and get engaged.

Amazon have just had a huge backlink campaign with their new kindle. If you make revolutionary products you will get backlinks.

iPhone apps, freeware and calculators get talked about.

There are a lot of possible opportunities, but the most important idea is to get people to talk about what you do. Hit the blogsphare.

I don't know if this will help that much but I was at a seminar with the marketing director of "the best job in the world" campaign. You know, the blogger on the luxury island.

Basically, they done it through two avenues and they had a small budget and this was classed as one of the top 50 marketing campaigns ever done. Basically, they done social media, this was one huge part of their campaign and the others was viral news. I think a major brand doesn't care so much about article writing etc... They will try to make a campaign go viral in my opinion.

A good real life example is Discovery channels "the world is awesome" commercials. Search it on Youtube and you'll see what I'm talking about.
