I've got two older domains that are doing nothing at the moment. They used to be very popular 6 or 7 years ago. One of them is about 12 years old and is in the humor niche (again, used to be quite popular.) It has a humor site on it that hasnt changed content in a couple years. Both have a PR4 ranking. The 2nd one is in the social media niche -- a failed platform that was created to compete with Myspace when they were first growing. Currently the site is empty -- just shows the domain name when you go to it. Both domains have about 300 backlinks each, pointing back to them for their original content, of which I am not involved in those niches. If you have a niche that has to do with something different, let's say "Health products", what kind of value is there in 301 redirecting those URL's to point to a 2 year old health domain with a PR2 rank? Will that help or hurt the SEO of the growing health site, since those 600 backlinks have nothing to do with the same niche? What would you do? |

Untargeted traffic is useless. I have a 650 page site I no longer work on. I use it to test CPA and Adsense and other offers. It doesn't make a lot of cash like it used to... but it still makes money every single day. I'd figure out how to get some kind of revenue stream going or I'd sell it. |

Yeah this wouldn't add any value to your site, unless you had a 'funny health products' page that you could link the humor blog too for instance. But honestly you could get 300 backlinks the right way, very easy... So I wouldn't gamble with it, because it's all about relevancy my friend. If you have a established PR4 site, and you're just tired of dealing with it then consider putting it up on Flippa. Getting some cash for the sites might be serve you better than redirecting to a new domain. |

If the bank links do not work or help drive traffic then they are pretty much a waste of investment. Redirecting will be a waste of time and investment in time in this case, as this is in a totally different niche.

Just to be clear, the 301 redirect isn't for the traffic. It's for the new site to inherit the history of the old site (trust, PR, etc.) Otherwise I would just redirect without using a 301. Does that change the way some of you are thinking? |
