Default Finally Broke Into The Top 10 in Google - How I Did It and What I Would Do Next Time(Step by Step)

The first part of the thread title probably doesn't sound all that impressive to some of you, but for me this is an achievement as when I started I knew next to nothing about SEO(on page AND off page), and this keyword phrase is VERY competitive and the sites on the front page have mostly been around for a long time. Micro Niche Finder comes back with a red 524.

I don't know if any of you remember, but I had a thread a few months back titled 'The Google Dance Thread'. When I started it, my main niche site had gone from number 17 down to 52, then after 3 weeks or so settled at number 13, where it has pretty much stayed since. I've been working pretty hard the last few days to get it moving upwards again, and I just checked it's ranking and it now sits nicely at number 10

I'm really pleased with this - the site is in a very competitive niche full of authority sites(articles, web 2.0's etc rarely appear on the first two or three pages). The keyword phrase gets around 15,000+ searches per month.

I only really started seriously turning my attention towards making it rank higher again in the last 7-10 days. I do think consistency and link variation(i.e in terms of backlink sources) is key.

I haven't built a profile backlink to it for nearly 3 months now, and won't be building any more. Don't get me wrong, I think profile backlinks can be great for establishing a site, particularly when it's new, but once on the first 2 pages I usually stop building them.

I built this site back in August(with help from my wife) - if I had been more consistent I know I could have got it into the top 10 much quicker, and maybe even in the top 5. I think the key really is consistency. OK, enough about this - if I was building a new site today, here is how I would plan on getting it to rank in the top 10, regardless of niche, competition and everything else after everything I have learned:-

1. I'd of course add some content to it. If it was in the form of articles/blog posts I would first do some keyword research. I'd make sure the phrase I targeted in each article would have at least 100 searches per month - ideally many more. I'd also make the effort to try and include the main keyword phrases I was targeting for the entire site throughout these articles - making it look natural to the reader of course. I'd say at least 2 articles to get started, but even better 3 or 4. I like to go for 500+ words for each one where I can.

2. Assuming a sitemap is present, it has been submitted to the search engines and everything is taken care of in terms of meta tag, description and keywords I would then use the free Website Auditor module from Link Assistant SEO Tools to see how my site rated for onpage SEO. I'd look at the scores for the top 10 sites ranking for the keyword phrases I was targeting and follow the instructions to get a percentage close to, or higher than all of them. Things like bold keywords, inter linking between articles/pages, keyword density, alt image tags etc etc. This is vital to get things off on the right foot in terms of when Google and the other search engines come to visit.

3. I'd submit my site to some of the top social bookmarking sites - Digg, Propellor, Redditt etc etc. I use Socialbot for this but what's important is that you do at least a few - it helps with being indexed, and of course brings some lovely link juice. I like to vary my titles and description when I'm submitting to a large amount of them.

4. I'd submit my RSS feed to some of the top agreggators. I use RSS Bot for this, and also some manually too. These agreggators often have a high PR, and remember - new content = fresh backlinks bringing juice to your site as a whole.

5. I'd make a promise to myself to update content on a regular basis. A new article/post each day is great, but more realistically 2-3 per week is more manageable and will make the site look relevant and fresh to the search engines.

6. I'd write a press release. No matter what the niche, there are a lot of free high PR press release sites that are great for link juice and traffic. This is an important step in creating a prescence for a site in my opinion. To start with, I'd submit my release to the following free sites:-

PR Log - Free Press Release Distribution & Free Press Release Submission
Free Press Release - Online Press Release Distribution Service
http://www.i-newswire.com
BigNews.biz Is Your Free Press Release and World News Distribution Center

Those 4 alone are great and will bring some nice link juice, but in addition I would also submit to the 25 included in PressBot.

7. I'd turn my attention towards traffic and backlinks from article directories. I'd both rewrite the articles on my site and write fresh ones. I use the spinner at TheRichJerksNet's Article Productions to create unique versions of articles. It completely rewrite each title and paragraph 3 times, giving me at least 20 unique articles as a result for each one article. I submit the first 10 to the top directories - EZA, Articlesbase, Go Articles, Article Productions etc etc.

This list is great for picking out the top directories by traffic and PR:-

List Of Top 50 Article Directories By Traffic, PageRank

8. I'd then submit some more of my unique articles to some web 2.0 properties - Weebly, Wetpaint, Blog, Blogger, Zimbio, Squidoo, Hubpages etc etc.

9. I'd put one of my unused spins into a tool like Article Tool Chest or The Best Spinner, to get it into Syntax format and make it further unique then submit it to the hundreds of directories in Article Bot(can you tell I love Incansoft tools )

10. I'd backlink some of these articles and web 2.0 properties by social bookmarking and submitting the RSS feeds.

That is how I'd establish the site, I'd like to think I could do all that comfortably in a week, although spreading it out over 2 weeks to a month might be better. I'd check my ranking, but wouldn't be too concerned about where it is sitting, because I'd know I'm going to put in consistent effort to help it rise. Here is an overview of what I'd try to do every single day:-

(BTW, I pay no attention to 'nofollow' and such - a link is a link in my eyes)

Blog commenting

I have found I can leave 5+ blog comments in 20 mins - half an hour comfortably. I simply go to Google Blog Search, go to 'advanced search', put in the keywords I want it to find, and those I don't, set it to find blogs from the last day and off I go. I always try to contribute with my comments, and offer good feedback on the topic I'm commenting on. I don't always use my keyword phrase as my name/link - maybe one in every 3.

Directory Submissions

If I'm honest, if I didn't have Directory Bot I'm not sure I would do this, but as I have I usually automatically submit my site to 50 directories a day. I make sure to rotate the description of my site.

Yahoo Answers

Yes, I know it's nofollow - but does nofollow = no link juice? I'm not convinced it does. Besides, it's a great way to get traffic too.

Profile Backlinks

Although I have moved away from these recently, if I was in a competitive niche I think I would do maybe 3-5 of them each day to get things moving for a new site.

I'd of course keep building my site with new content, keep submitting articles to directories and much more - but the above is pretty much step by step what I'd do to establish a new site and get it rising in the SERPS from the off. I hope it helps some of you

I probably forgot to add a few things, one of them being that I social bookmark every new piece of content I add to my sites

Good job.

Sounds like you found your groove and work template to follow for future sites.

Well done on your success.

How much trafic/$ are making from your efforts?

Unless you know what your competitor's SEO strength was though, you really can not tell how hard it was to rank for your term.

MNF does not really tell you that. So do not be surprised if your approach does not work on your next competitive niche.

I haven't been concentrating on this particular site in terms of traffic and sales recently. 95% of my traffic is organic and I get between 15 and 30 unique visitors per day. Yes, it's very little, but like I say - I haven't really been concentrating on it. I do make some Clickbank sales through it from time to time, but my long term goal is to sell my own product. I'm going to start writing that in the next few weeks and am going to spend lots of time on to make sure it is an extremely good product. I'm currently building a list too.

I have another site that I have been doing lots of these things with and for one keyword phrase I have the top 8 of the top 10 places in Google - the site itself, articles and press releases. This keyword phrase alone brings me 20+ unique visitors per day and I have made most of my money this month through a CPA offer I am promoting on it.

Trust me, I knew how tough my competitors were. When I built the site I didn't have MNF, I had the free trial of Market Samurai. I don't just judge strength by keyword tools - I use SEQ Quake to take a more detailed look, and I go through the top 10 manually too. Trust me - this niche is strong - most of the sites in the top 10 have thousands of backlinks, have been around at least 5 years and have PR's(not that that really matters) up to 6. But more than that - they are authority sites. You can't just write an EZA or put up a web 2.0 and land on page 1, or even 2.

I understand where you're coming from - but I am confident my strategy will work for most niches and sites. Do I still have a lot to learn? Hell yes, but I'm on the right track I think

Edit: I understand your skepticism, especially as you make almost 60k every month through adsense

That's the spirit I honestly believe no top 10 is unbreakable - all that differs is how you get there, and how long it takes

Thanks for the thread. I'm still finding my own kind of plan of action when it comes to backlinking, I'm not very consistent, always trying different things and never quite keeping track of what works best. It's great that you have this plan that works for you, and it also included a little food for thought for me too - thanks

Liam great to hear your good news. I am well and truely pleased for you and like you say, its really persistance that pays off

If you remember I struggled in sandbox for months too and with some few tips from warrior Terry my site has been out now for 2 weeks and I am getting around 500 visitors a day and its just sweet to be finally ranking again in google. My site was a little over a year and had over 17 000backlinks in explorer but because I had neglected it for a while, when I started building backlinks I was sandboxed (or whaterver the term) and languished in there for nearly 3 months. It sucks.

Keep us posted when you reach the number one spot. I have managed to get a few keywords to number 1. These are more long tail and some I havent even optimised for.

More success to you Liam

Liam,

Very helpful post.

What would you suggest are reliable methods or tools (free if possible) to check accurately:

> PR of competing websites

> Actual Number of backlinks.
In using the Yahoo tool it doesn't seem very accurate, and for Google one way I've used is to put a website's url in quotes, which I'm sure is only good for ballpark numbers.

Thanks.

Thank you for the step by step guide. I do find profile links tend to make your site jump around a bit more then other methods, but it is hard to argue with the end results which are typically Page 1 rankings.

Do you do any video or podcasting?

I use this one, it tells you all of that and is WAY better than Yahoo Site Explorer and Backlink Watch in my opinion

Since I've stopped doing profile links, my sites have danced WAY less. Then again, I did used to hit them pretty hard - as I said in my OP, I'd only do 3-5 per day, and I'd do so consistently if I wanted my site to be stable in terms of it's position. I do think they are great for helping to establish a site, but once on the first two pages, I personally won't use them any more.

No, no video or podcasting as yet - I need to get into the former for sure though, it's an area I've really neglected so far

Thanks for your post, for me very helpfull, I have a question about press releases, I have seen some services who will add your pressrelease to 300,400 or 500+ news related websites and directories.
ArticleBot will just add to 25 directories, in your expierence, is that enough or should I go for the relative expensive press release service?

Thanks,

Ramon

I've only ever used free sites, and I find the 4 I mentioned earlier to be very good. The ones is Press Bot are mostly smaller ones, but are still pretty useful. You'd probably get better results in terms of traffic and distribution with paid sites, but make sure you look around and find the best ones

It is so nice of you to share your experience on getting top 10 on Google. However, we cannot make sure that, we can get success for all the cases on this way. Because, SEO cannot be predicted. Isn't? But, we can apply all of the things which you have done to get success. Sometimes, we would get success with less work than you, sometimes with more work than you. It depends.

I agree with Dashboy! for some of my sites I really have to put out but then for others I managed to rank well with minimal effort.

I guess in the latter case, I was fortunate to score some great domains.

Thanks for sharing Liam

Nice Post, well done.

Its nice to hear and re-affirm what I myself have been thinking for my next site and how I would go about building from the ground up again. I used to think getting to page 1 was only for authority sites and anyone able to perform Black Magic.

With the help of warriors here and hearing of susscesses like this I now know different, my site is just starting to get ranked and even made first sales after a week or so, so I know we can do it.

Congratulations on your achievement.

I think now days, it doesn't matter if your backlinks are dofollow or nofollow they're still links and they all help.

Also, what about forum posting? You can gain backlinks easily by posting on forums.

Anyway, thanks for this post it's been really helpful!

this is an amazing thread Liam, very great. I have some very urgent questions though as I am pursuing a similar goal to you on a larger scale.
How old is your site and how long did it take to get out of the sandbox for this term onto the first page?
Do you realize that if your site is under a year old, it might still do the "dance" and drop again for no reason?
How are you ranking on yahoo and bing for this term?
How many hours a day did you dedicate to this?
thanks ahead of time!

Free Press Release Distribution

I hope it helps some of you

thanks for interesting tips. since I'm new with RSS, what RSS feed agreggators you suggest?

Thank you! I was looking for something like this so I could break into top 10 or at least top 20 right now for my main keyword. It is NOT very competitive except that the sites before me are AGED and some are authority sites of course. It's never taken me this long to break past 50 so it's really beginning to feel like a competition to me and I need some help to propel me past these other sites. I'm ranking very well for the long tail keywords so I'm not concerned, but would love to have a first page spot for the main one word keyword too! I'm also getting $.03 clicks through adwords so I wonder if its really necessary to focus so much on first page for the one word keyword, but at this point is the challenge of it that is driving me! Thanks for your help with this...will let ya know if I can make it happen!!

My site is pretty much exactly 6 months old now. Like I said, I'm positive I could have got it up there substantially quicker if I had been more consistent and done the right things from the very beginning

It's actually dancing right now, but I know it'll come back in the next few days. A few months ago I would have been panicking and anxious for it to come back, but I get decent traffic from the other search engines and other methods, so I'm not worried at all. I did quite a bit of well needed on site optimization last week, so I figure that has brought on 'the dance'.

The site is currently number 9 in Bing and number 13 in Yahoo

I highly recommend purchasing RSS Bot(or similar software), it's a one time payment and literally takes a couple of minutes to submit your feed to 30 of the best ones. There are quite a few detailed lists of hundreds of them on the web, including this one - Blog And RSS Feed Submission: Best RSS Directories Where To Submit Your Blog Feed Part 1 Hope that helps

Hey, Liam, first of all, congrats! I know this thread is from a previous age, already, in this modern and fast world, and I'm sure you are doing even better now. I was just following your threads and finding so good content on them couldn't do less than saying thanks!

I actually have a site with one page ranking 9 for it's main keyword, but it has some nice competitors bellow, so it brings little traffic, and was looking for something like your post here to make some order in this huge knowledge warrior's database, to try to get that page a little more up in the Serps...

So, again, congrats, and thanks!!
