Hostgator vs Bluehost

Hey guys,

Currently using bluehost, and considering the switch to host gator as I've heard so many great things about it.

Just wondering what your guys thoughts are.... I've had no issues with Bluehost, and the pricing is pretty much the same. But is Host Gator good enough to warrant a switch?

Any input from those who have used either would be great!

I have both, and they are nearly identical honestly. Think I like the most about hostgator is having a reseller account which comes in handy if you have multiple sites that you eventually sell.

Other than that, don't switch unless you just want too. You're not gaining one thing from the next, and like you said the pricing itself is very close to the same as well.

I use both as well and agree 100%. Nearly identical, except if you want the reseller account then hostgator.

Yes, definitely. There will be no harm other than benefits if you made the switch. Their service is exceptional.

I have been using bluehost for months now and it really works so well for me. They have an affiliate program already which could earn you $65 per sale which is good enough for me.

Based up on my experience, I have to say HostGator is the deal. I have 9 shared hosting accounts with different companies for my sites and so far HostGator has given me almost 100% uptime and one minor issue that was fixed almost immediately in the 3+ years I have been with them.

Hey guys... thanks for all the input! I just keep hearing host gator's name, with little mention of bluehost... so I thought I may be missing something!

Another quick question... I usually buy my domain's from bluehost (just for convenience), and with the added privacy it costs about $15/domain. Any suggestions for cheaper domain purchases, and if I purchase elsewhere, can it be easily (and quickly) be transferred to Bluehost.

Always buy your domain names and hosting from different companies. I use namecheap. com ($9.69 + free privacy) and all you have to do is change the dns settings in your domain cpanel. It is very simple. Good luck

I've been a little annoyed by bluehost, to be honest.

First, when I signed up, they never gave me a total until after they billed my credit card. I'm 35 and I've never been billed before being a given a total in my life.

Next, I tried to get my $50 adwords credit, but I was told I needed to register. It said "search help for 'register'". I did and got no useful information. I only figured out how through googling.

That was the first 90 seconds...

You should switch to hostagator, it's my main hosting provider service and I have no problem at it at all.

The support is the best as well.

+1 on above suggestion. I too use NameCheap and HostGator for same reasons and works very well.

I use HostGator (since Fall 2007) and have been satisfied so far. If you're not having any issues with your current host though, you may just want to "leave well enough alone", as the saying goes.

I always get my domain names and hosting from separate companies. That way, if you want to change hosts you're not at the mercy of your current host. YOU control your domain name.

I am very biased towards Site5. I've been using Site5 exclusively for around ten years and couldn't be happier. My friend had BlueHost and was miserable with lots of downtime but he switched to Site5 and was happy, too.

That's just my experience... Take it with a grain of salt and do plenty of research! =)

I use IGXHost to host my site. I highly recommend them. Theyre on it in an instant if you got anything bad popping up. And I got a monster site and yet they are so patient!!!

I will badmouth Bluehost for the rest of my online career. I used bluehost for about 5 months and had a bad experience. I'm not the only one. Bluehostsucks.com.

Every week, and I'm not exaggerating, every week, my site was down for hours at a time. The last straw was like a 48 hour downtime.

On top of that, I occasionally had really long load times. I'm talking like 12 to 15 seconds. I called tech support to ask them why my site was taking so long to load and they told me it was related to my database. I didn't believe them because my hosting was running 5 adsense sites with a total of 20 posts on them and minimal plugins. The tech support guy then proceeded to talk down to me when I asked for his supervisor and told me that I didn't know what I was talking about and a bunch of other disrespectful things.

So then I talked to a different tech support guy who told me someone on my shared hosting account was sucking up all the bandwidth.

Moral of my story. Don't use bluehost ever!

Thank God I choose Hostgator. Before I made my decision. I think hostgator had a better payment plan for monthly billing instead of 1 or 2 year contacts that I think Bluehost had at the time.

Plus it had more features. Which is always a good thing.

Its not as editable with the php.ini file as other hosts. But the customer support, reseller accounts, uptime vs downtime, and such are awesome.

If you are happy with your current host - why take on the hassle of moving sites?

When you need more hosting THEN add a hostgator account if you want. I like HG reseller accounts and have used them for years - but I wouldn't change hosts unless I was unhappy where I was (and I've done that, too).

I have used bluehost for over two yaers and never had any issues. I run around 25 websites with databases on the one shared hosting account. They do have what they call CPU throttling which means each account on the shared hosting will have it's CPU time "cut-off" momentarily/intermittantly when account has excesive CPU activity. On the plus side it means aothers accounts on your shared hosting should not be able to bring your sites down. Ther only downside is if you have some heavy duty scripts like autoblogs running as this will certainly "throttle".
The other issue is that they do not offer any reseller hosting so you need to go to hostgator for that.

I have had a reseller account with hostgator for a few months now and it's great. Set up all your sites on reseller accounts if you want to sell them then you can offer hosting in the deal. I use it to give hosting space to my students. It's obviously a more money than hostgator baby which seems to be the popular account to have.

I have tried a few "cheap" reseller hostings and even with a lot of upfront due dilligence I have lost 3 accounts (companies folded or bailed). The grief was just too much so never again.

Hostgator is better , but if you have no problem then carry on your old hosting .

I have accounts on both. As others have said, they are nearly carbon copies of each other with a few exceptions.

For whatever reason, I find myself gravitating more to HG than BH and recommend all my offline clients there as well. Nothing against BH, its just a feeling I have that gives HG the edge that makes me more comfortable recommending it.

Since you already have BlueHost, my recommendation would be to keep your existing stuff there and give HG a shot for your new projects.

I have been with HostGator for several years... my only suggestion is Do Not use the online chat... they are slow and rude. If they are working with you they may be working with several other persons. I have learned to call in to the 866# and have Great Success then and very quick to resolve all my issues. BlueHost I am not sure of I switched to a reseller account and didn't get to use the customer service at BH.

Wow. I have to say that my experience with HG chat has been entirely different from yours. I have no doubt that what you say is true for you, but I've been with them several years and use chat support quite often and I have nothing but praise for it.

I have found that every time I've hit the chat app, a technician has been able to resolve my issue within 10-15 minutes. And they've always been professional and courteous. I've never felt like I was just one of many receiving help, although I'm sure I am.

This is the one feature that I routinely brag on hostgator for and I've never left a chat without giving a 10 out of 10 rating.

Ive been with Hostgator for some time now, and I cant compare it to bluehost but from what I see, tons of affiliate marketers are heavily promoting Hostgator.

When I started IM, the webhosting name I came across very often was Hostgator as compared to bluehost.

If the only reason you want to move to HG is because you hear everyone saying it's good, that's pointless. If your happy with your current host, then there isn't really much point in changing hosts, you won't be saving any money, just wasting time and causing headaches
