Default Adwords Budget Optomizer?

After a long spell of article marketing, I've finally decided to dive into Adwords, so I decided to do a little controlled experiment. After doing keyword research and fiddling with the Traffic Estimator, I was ready to launch my first campaign. I accepted the offer to use the Budget Optomizer and I'm now awaiting results.

Can I get Your opinions on this tool, maybe some pros & cons ...anyone?

Don't use it. It's just helps Google take more money from you.

I would say to not use it.

The only reason being is you want full control over your Google account and how much you are spending.

Basically the budget optimizer will try and get the most clicks for your budget, but the main thing you should look at is sales.

The golden rule for me with Adwords is this:

"It is not about the number of clicks you are getting but more about the sales you are getting for those clicks."

Just my 2 pence.

Hope this helps!

Chris

I was sort of getting that feeling that the only one really benefiting from my using it is Google. I'm definitely going to tweak the campaign without it.

just monitor the conversions. This the single most important when dealing with adwords. Cut the loosers, keep the winners, increase spending on the winners so that you'll see more conversions.

I used budget optimizer initially when I started adwords because I totally have no idea what is the price I should bid for the keywords. The function gave me a very good CTR and good ad position. BUT the price I paid for the keywords is a bit high for broad phrase keyword. I think once you have more knowledge about adwords, you should have controlled the bid but not use the optimizer. Use different types of keywords (eg. negative keywords)
I agree with Chris also.. "It is not about the number of clicks you are getting but more about the sales you are getting for those clicks."

Being my first campaign, I'm watching it rather closely. But I suppose it takes time (and especially data) to really streamline a campaign.

I'm using negative keywords, but I still don't have a real grasp on when I should use broad, phrase & exact match keywords.

I think Budget Optimizer might be good for the unlimited buget. What about those campaigns on a tighter budget?

Here's a tip for you:
Don't bid more than 1% of your expected commission from a sale.
Why?
If you get a 1% conversion rate, you are breaking even, anything over that is gravy.
A 1% conversion rate isn't that hard to get, if you've choosen the right keywords.

Thanks for the heads up Kirk.

Before starting the campaign, I did some careful calculations as to how much I had to bid. One thing's for sure: you don't know what's going to happen until you actually start. ...and that's when you start getting surprizes!

I'm not getting anywhere near the traffic I expected.
