I realize this is a very general question and there are numerous factors involved including strength of your site and competition, niche, the way you link build. However from experience I'll share with you what I've noticed in general It seems to take me about 30 profile backlinks to get ranked in the top in the 10 for non competitive niches, of course of those 30 not all are indexed yet, about 15 are indexed. For competitive phrases it seems to take about 70 links that is made up of 3 different varied phrases. I don't build 70 links to the same page with the same exact keyword as that is a surefire way to get dropped out of google, it's the most obvious thing to do and will get you dropped, it's happened to me before. Would be interesting to hear other people's observations? |

It's not about the number of links.. it's about the quality of links and the strength of your competitors..

I don't think there's a specific number. Depends on your niche/site competion and what keyword/s you are trying to rank for.

Why don't you wait until all the postings get indexed by the Big Daddy.

In my ballpark it typically takes a couple hundred to get on the map for the easier keywords and some still haven't cracked the top 10 with a thousands of backlinks. If I have a juicy looking long-tail I'll throw a couple of backlinks at it to bump it up to the top of the page. Honestly, what your asking... I don't think anybody can give you a clear answer. Yeah, It's going to take a couple more backlinks to get on the first page of google for dating then it is for knitted kitty sweaters | ||

Hey Billionare, In general, I can do it with 120 profile links/blogs unless it's really tough keyword. It also helps if the site is well established. |

It all depends on the competition. I've cracked top 10 with a lower competition key phrase with only a few article links, other site's have take dozens of links from dozens of different sources. My quick method for link building article submissions (all original, writen myself or outsourced) wait and watch..... Original content Blogger blog with 5 or so posts embeded content links..... wait and watch..... Wordpress.org blog with 5 or so posts with embeded content links..... There are some other sites I occassionally use, but generally for a low to mid competition key phrase, I can crack top 10 with a few times through the above method..... |

For one more basic keyword related to my site we're talking about 100. For more complex keywords we're sitting at #12 and have 7,500. YMMV! |

I think assumption cannot apply everywhere. It's not possible to say about the exact number of backlinks needed to get up the rankings. It depends mainly on how strong the competitors are. It heavily depends on the on-page optimization as well. sometimes for a less competitive keyword, you may be able to come up to the first page without any backlinks just by doing proper on-page optimization given that your domain is exactly the keyword you are targeting. |

Guys if this discussion is going to have any sens you have to post at least two stats: Number of searches lets say according to Google keywords tool and number of competing websites. I will start I have a keyword I am trying to rank for it is a long tail keyword, 6mil competing websites, traffic 1.8 mil according to Google keywords ( this is really bad estimate) I have about 300 rank 5-8 back links and a more than a thousand lower tier backlinks like blogs, directories social bookmarks. And I am not even in top 50 in google. |
