You could use the google keyword tool. Just copy and past the link under the part that says website content. Then google will tell you what it thinks it should rank for, then you could take those keywords and do some searches and find out what they are ranking for.

You can use NicheWatch.com tool that is free. See how your site stacks up to the competition.

go and download traffic travis. (just google it)

There's a paid version but the free version is still amazing. It will give you a definite idea of keywords, i would give it a shot

You can do it in market samurai if you have it and find out their anchor text at the same time as well.

Thanks for the advice folks. I ran a check with the Google keyword tool on some of my own sites and it was ridiculously off. Traffic Travis looks cool but unless I'm mistaken it can only show you the adwords keywords a site is bidding on. I also have Market Samurai but I wasn't aware of a way to check the natural rankings for a site with MS. Did I just miss that somehow?

I'm looking to be able to run a domain name and find out what keywords the site organically ranks for in Google. Anyone know how to do that?

Are you sure the Google Keyword Tool was off when it checked your site?

It is not looking at what keywords you are actually using, but all the results they will return your site for. This includes synonyms and associated searches.

While this may not be exactly what your are looking for, it may actually be more powerful than having just the phrases someone is creating their site for. It gives you what Google believes is relevant.

I have not watched the video on Market Samurai, but if it can do it, it will be the first time I knew about it.

Hi, yes, I'm sure it was way off. It turned up almost exclusively keywords I did not rank for on one site and keywords that weren't even related to my niche for another. This was a result of google's synonym tool clearly not understanding what my niche was. It was as if my site was about county records and all google came up with was record players. Not the actual problem but you get the idea.

I just need a quick tool to find out what the organic rankings a particular site has without manually running hundreds, even thousands of possibilities.

Thanks though for all the tips.

Thanks but unless i'm missing something market leap just does the same thing. tells you where a site ranks for a specific keyword, not what keywords a specific site ranks for.

and buildpages seems to be about construction.

If I'm missing it please let me know.

I second that "Google Webmaster Tools" is THE BEST BY FAR!

It will give you a complete breakdown of keywords you are ranking for... ESPECIALLY ones you had NO IDEA YOU WOULD RANK FOR!

I found keywords that I NEVER THOUGHT OF BUT THAT BRING IN MADD TRAFFIC!

Its a MUST HAVE!

Of course, use other ones to BUT you should also have this in your arsenal!

Hope this helps...

I am trying to spy on my competitors. I am assuming Google webmaster tools will not let you do this, correct? I use my tracking tools to check for what I rank for and would prefer that google have as little information about which sites I own for fear of leaving a footprint. I try to shy away from their tools if it requires giving my domain in a way that connects everything to me.

All of these tools only check the ranking of keywords you enter. I really need something that tells you what the keywords are when you don't know them. Meaning you enter a url and then it shows you the keywords teh site ranks for. Anything out there like this?

Although it isn't exactly what you are looking for, you can get some useful information by checking the keyword density on a competitor's page. It won't tell you how the site is doing in google, but you can use that info to check manually if you want.

Here's one free keyword density tool that I use: ArticleUnderground

Use googles keyword tool and check the option to use a site rather than entering specific keywords.

Google will tell you EXACTLY what keywords it will rank your site for.

Thats also a very good on page SEO tool to use to make sure your on page SEO is passing googles tests.

I mentioned earlier that I tried this and it was pretty off. Another time I tried it and it gave me 720 possibilities for a pretty small site. I won't be able to try each one manually. I am looking for a tool that allows me to reverse engineer the source of my competitors organic google traffic.

Anyone?

I posted this site earlier, but maybe you did not see.
Keywords Database - keyrow.com

Simply copy and paste the url that you want to check into the website field and hit the submit button. It will return all the keywords that a site ranks for as well as the change in the rank. You do not have to enter keywords as that is just another option for searching.

Johnny,

You can find exactly what you are looking for by going to alexa.com. Enter a domain url to find the site info and then click on the 'keywords' tab. It will tell you the websites top 10 keywords.

I have built this feature into my seo toolbox app which analyzes the top 10 sites for any specific keyword and also extracts all their top keywords. Wso is only $17 BUT you can find their top keywords for free using Alexa and it is pretty accurate.

Hope that helps ya.

Andy

Sorry, I did miss this. I tried checking about 5 sites with it that I happened to know the ranking for, just to check it out. It either had no data or the data was waaaaay off, but about 30 or 40 spots in most cases. Thanks for posting though.

Finally!!! this actually worked. Thanks. It doesn't seem to have the data for a lot of pretty big sites, but it does definitely work for some. So thanks. This proved to be a hard question to get the answer to that was accurate. If anyone knows of a more consistent tool, please let me know. Thanks again Andy.
