All the above mentioned are good enough for generating backlinks, the backlinks which generating via article submission with PR will be better. You need to build links constantly. If your website is unique, get the word out and you might get a good amount of natural links.

Another method I just started using is go to Google and Google website value. You will get a list of sites that estimate the value of your website. You get a link when you do that. I did it to one of my sites today that was at the bottom of page 3 for my keyword and within hours it was at the top of page two for the keyword. I'm still working on it to get to page one.

Directory and article submission can get you backlinks for free.. You can also buy links from high quailty sites, but make sure that the niche is related.

You can go to yahoo explorer and type linkdomain:www.domain.com. The part that interests you is the Inlinks part which are inbound links pointing to the web site.
