Default How does Google "view" your site? Answered Inside...

Do you want to have an incite on how Google "views" your site? Run your site through the https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal by typing your site in the "Website content " tab. I think you might be surprised on what Google thinks your site is about. Keep in mind web content is only a part of SEO but it is something that should be looked at.

One more key is to:
1. Search you site or a page on your site you are looking to optimize on Google.
2. Click the "Cached" link under your listing.
3. Then click the "Tex-only version" link at the top right.

You can easily see, again what Google sees, all your links and more importantly your image alt tags and/ or image names. You may be surprised at what Google sees. Keep in mind that to keep your site keyword rich/ targeted you should take all your non-important images, like background images & buy it now images, and name them using numbers i.e. 132.jpg. This tells Google that this image is not important.

If you were to name it "buy-it-now.jpg" Google may think that your site is related to the keyword "buy it now". This also keeps thieves from searching for, and stealing your images/ graphics. Conversely if it is an image related to your product/ niche, like a product image, then name it something like "split-testing-plugin.jpg" and give it an alt image tag of one of your keywords. This alt image tag will show be the anchor text if that image is a link.

Try this concept with a shopping cart site, and see what Big G thinks..

This will open a lot of peoples eyes as to why most shopping cart sites never rank in the search engine.

Google hasn't got a clue as to what the website is about..

Take care

Bruce

Wow, that is really revealing. Nice find!

What's weird though is that my site still comes up for smaller keywords listed on there as "not enough data."

Google thinks that my site is about nursing. Tried that with this forum and it is all about making money. Which is correct I suppose.

Wow. Thanks for the tip
Google sees my site exactly as I intended it to be and I'm covering a broader spectrum of high ranking keywords then I had ever imagined.

It's better to be a first rate version of yourself than a second rate version of someone else.

I have looked at my "cached" index page many times to see when it was re-indexed but I overlooked some of the other important stuff it reveals. Thanks for sharing.

I believe the website content tab can only be used by US users.

Its important to, for any relevant image link, to put in "alt image" text. Because when Google caches the page it turns the image into a link with the "alt image" text as the anchor text for that link. Thus, using images to create links with anchor text pointing to your internal pages.

Thanks - that's a great tip and is a quick way to show which keywords you are currently ranking if they are even found on your homepage to begin with. Having said this, backlinking still has to be done on these keywords but having them on the homepage just helps give an edge to get it ranked by Google faster.

I think G is cocky about this. They'd rather people use their "Shopping" search

@ Bruce Hearder & Hardi Wijaya
I don't think that its a valid point that no shopping cart sites will rank, see Brad Fallons sites myweddingfavors.com. One thing you should do, and yes its a lot of work, is replace every instance of the shopping cart folders and links with numbers i.e. if you look at your home page source info you will see many links to parts of your shopping cart.

Try this look at your source info while on a page you want to rank. Now see how many times your website references non related folders (/shoppingcart/ - your site doesn't have anything to do with the keyword "shoppingcart") and images (header.jpg - your site doesn't have anything to do with the keyword "header")

So instead of a link to your shopping cart being being yoursite.com/shoppingcart/images/header.jpg Now if Google saw that link, what do you think it may think that your site will be about, especially if you reference the "shoppingcart" folder 20-30 times every page? Google will think your site is about what ever you tell it, so:

Rename EVERY instance of "shoppingcart" and every non-related image with a number (remember Google ignores files-names and images that are numbers), so
yoursite.com/shoppingcart/images/header.jpg
becomes
yoursite.com/68465/894651/873515.jpg

This way the only links on you reference are important links like yoursite.com/category/product1 or yoursite.com/internet-marketing/how-to-rank-in-google

Keep in mind that "shoppingcart" would be what every shopping cart software you use. This can also be done with wordpress but would be a TON of work.

It works fine from here (non-US ip). Probably the new design is being updated gradually to all country servers.

Excellent information here.

I've been using other web page spider viewers, and was not aware that there's a clever way to know how Google sees our web page.
