Default What are the best practices for Google optimization?

I was wondering what would be the most important aspects of an effective Google optimization for a company web site, especially on-page SEO factors. I had appreciate any help.

You don't need a site map.
title is not a meta tag, but should be optimized.
meta keywords is useless.
meta description is not taken into account for rankings.

Google tells you that good, desirable content is great.
Quality backlinks from high PR sites is also fantastic.

Use the <h1>, etc... headings to emphasize content.

Paul,
Mild disagreement on just a couple of things.

Optimizing meta keywords and descriptions may not do anything for organic listings now days, but they still play a role in PPC. Overlooking that stuff at the beginning may come back to bite someone if they run a PPC ad down the road.

If you wana go for optimization of your site. Be sure your website is rich in content. The content should be original and informative to the viewer. Try to use atleast one h1 heading for the every keywords in the page. Dont forget meta tags. You have to specify keywords, title and description in meta tags. Last but important is the backlinks coz google rates your website as per your backlinks.

These are something you should consider inside your website when you do On-Page SEO: Use Keywors in the following places (The first four items are particularly important, with Google giving weight to keywords found in the title much more than any of the other locations)

1. Title: Use starting with first or second word in the title
2. Heading - Use CSS to control the size of heading
3. First paragraph of page - Bold and/or italicize keyword also
4. Link(anchor) text
5. Last paragraph of text
6. URLs
7. Folder & file names
8. Image ALT text
9. Link TITLE attribute text

But it's often used in SERP's so don't overlook this. Your Title and sometimes description is displayed to searchers, and based upon that they decide if they are going to visit your website or not.
