Default The difference between 1 and 5 in google

I have 2 site ranking quite well

(I know that google adword keyword tool is not 100% accurate )

First has 27,100 exact searches and I am ranked position 5.
The second one has 9,900 exact searches and I rank at 6.

The problem is that I am hardly getting any visits.
For example lets take yesterday the first one got 4 visits and the second one got 2. The most visits I had in one day was 10 for the first site.

I am working to get them both to the number one spot but I was just wondering if the difference between 1 and 5 can be that huge.

Does anybody have actual experience with this ?
Maybe some numbers ?

Thanks for the help.

The problem should be your keyword. You should select keywords which are releated to your website and people often use them to search products or service ( related to your website) on google.

Obviously the keywords are related to the site. The entire website is built around the keyword. Like a XFactor/Clickbump kinda website.

well, the difference is huge. I remember reading a chart that says something like number one position gets 50 % of traffic, 2 gets like 25 percent and then 3 - 9 get a couple percentage points each

A lot depends on the description that Google shows. Maybe there lies your problem?

I was also reading, that #2 is better than #1, because lot of people skip #1. Kind of as if they were looking for middle ground, eliminating the 1st and the last. But I certainly tend start my clicking on #1.

The number one spot gets more than 50% click. Check out this article about Google SERP click distribution. Its old but i don't think our browsing behavior changed much since then.

seoresearcher.com/distribution-of-clicks-on-googles-serps-and-eye-tracking-analysis.htm

Also, your title and meta description plays a vital role in attracting clicks. Its just like PPC marketing. people click more relevant ad copies with the main keyword included and the theme of the copy is related to their intention (buying or browsing). I guess same is true with organic search. If you see all the big merchant webistes they have the same kind of title and description.

It's very good if you are number 1 for your niche site, but also you can get traffic from another places, not only from google.
And yes the difference is huge.
I watched some of the statistics that says that in most cases very small number of people are looking for sites below the 3 place, if they found what they need. I don't no is this true or not

Your numbers sound about right... 27,100 is around 900 searches a day... the average amount of traffic for the #5 spot is around 4% = around 36 hits a day.

You might be on the low end but the google keywords tool has been know to be a little off and depending on how effective / eye catching your title and description are and how effective / eye catching the 4 sites ahead of you are... you're numbers aren't way off the mark.

This is the problem with low traffic keywords... unless you are #1 you're not going to get much traffic unless you rely on long-tail traffic.

Oh yeah... actual experience, exact match: 1,220,000, ranking: #5 = 15k hits a day... which is way lower than 4%, should be around 50k a day but the sites ahead of me are hogging up all of the traffic.

Synthesize me, And reboot, I need to start again, I need to make it different

Here's similar data that supports what everyone else is saying. The source is AOL from a while back but it similar for all "link listing" presentations. Even for sites like creditcards.com. I have a friend their and the CTR trends are almost exactly as those below.

SEO clicks by position (source: AOL)
Ranking Number 1 receives 42.1 percent of click throughs.
Ranking Number 2 receives 11.9 percent of click throughs.
Ranking Number 3 receives 8.5 percent of click throughs.
Ranking Number 4 receives 6.1 percent of click throughs.
Ranking Number 5 receives 4.9 percent of click throughs.
Ranking Number 6 receives 4.1 percent of click throughs.
Ranking Number 7 receives 3.4 percent of click throughs.
Ranking Number 8 receives 3.0 percent of click throughs.
Ranking Number 9 receives 2.8 percent of click throughs.
Ranking Number 10 receives 3.0 percent of click throughs.

Good luck!

One more reason for this is PPC results that shows above the organic results. If that keyword is so much profitable than there may be 2-3 PPC results just above organic results. This heavily reduces the click through rate. Moreover Title and Descriptions of PPC results remains very catchy and promotional thus a normal user is more likely to click on these.

I have personally seen the difference between being between numbers 5 to 10 and later being between 1 to 5. It's like a 150% spike in traffice for my site.

And when I personally do a google search, say, for keyword 'Easy SEO'. If the number 1 entry is
  • Easy SEO
and the number 3 is
  • Easy SEO - Soar to Number 1 in 36 hours
I tend to click directly on Number 3. Go figure.

1. The KW Tool isn't accurate at all. Do NOT trust it to build niche sites.
2. The top 2 positions gain the highest traffic. As shown by searchnology, work for #1 and #2.

Good Luck

Try some other search engines too other than google. With perfect and limited number of keywords and bookmarking, you should get to #1
If you check, my niche is really vast, but still i manage to be on the first page of google for the every word I target
