The domain names for my web sites reflect the keyphrase I'm targeting. So for example I'm selling spinning pretty widgets my domain name would be spinningprettywidgets.com My question is this: does adding an extra word such as "the" or "best" to my domain name hurt my SEO? I know that .com domains are the best so if spinningprettywidgets.com is not available my options are spinningprettywidgets.us (which doesn't rank as well) or bestspinningprettywidgets.com (which ranks better b/c it is .com). Am I stressing too much about this? Should I go ahead and get bestspinningprettywidgets.com or look for a different keyphrase that I don't have to add another "extra" word to? |

The best option would be spinningprettywidgets.com then go for the .net, .org, etc... If they are all taken then add a word and get the .com but add it to the end if you can.

I don't see many people actually typing in "bestspinninprettywidgest.com" into their browser. Or are you referring to ME fat-fingering something? That is entirely possible.

You want the truth? Do a search using your keyphrase and see what sites pop up on the first page. Those are your competition. If they don't care about keywords, then why are you? You need to compete with other sites in your niche who are all ready on top. If you think some trick like a domain name is going to magically get you #1, you are sadly mistaken. In fact, I urge any one to do a search for best ____ _____ with your choice of words and see what comes up. Paul | |

it is best if you can get exact keyphrase as your domain name. I have seen very good results in that way. for example without any additional SEO got my website in 1st page using exact keyphrase as domain name

Domains with more than 3 keywords are not good. They are much harder to boost up in rankings in my experience (probably because google sees it as a domain "spamming"). You are better off looking for another keyphrase.
