100 link "rule" - does nofollow matter?

So there's an unofficial "rule" that the engines don't follow links on a page after the first 100 or so they find.


Not sure how real it is, but for the sake of this conversation, let's assume it's real.

The question is:

If you have 175 links on a page, and you nofollow the first 125, for example, does the crawler skip them and follow your other 50 links as if they were the ONLY 50 links on the page (outbound, of course)?

Mostly a theory question, but one I found intriguing and didn't have an immediate answer for.

but i think google will not skip the nofollow link. maybe the main effect it doesn't have link juice.

In theory the crawler should allow the no follow links but I think Google will still scan them. You do not want to have a link to your site on a page with over a hundred links because it may be considered a link farm and may actually have a negative impact on your site's ranking.

phoenix, read my post above, google dismisses it COMPLETELY now.

Now right click and view the page of my site, and notice the nofollow on my contact page, is it indexed? Nope. This was put into effect about 6 weeks or so ago... you may of heard a lot of people saying ALL their backlinks have gone, this is the reason (well, one of them any hows)

Google will still crawl or "log" the nofollow tag links, and index those pages, but just won't pass on the linkjuice.
