Literally two weeks ago I started my new blog. I have not even started promoting it. dirtysmoke .com It jumped to Google spot #5 it seems instantly for KW "dirty smoke". I expected that much. I figured it would take quite a few months to take #1 spot. A few days later, I'm #1. Unexpected! My age? Infant. Backlinks? Maybe 1 or 2. SEO? Newbie. Content? Handful of blog posts. So can someone please tell me how I beat the #2 spot which has SO much more backlinks, age, authority!? The answer to this question will help me with future projects. |

Well I'd like to know how it happened so that in the future it could be intentional, not accidental ![]() is it because my domain name matches the keywords? If so, I will focus my domain on specific keywords. OR did I do something right in creating it? I'd simply like someone to check it out and tell me what may have helped it take #1 |

It's a phenomena that's pretty common. When a site is brand-spankin'-new, it'll show up as being really high up, but give it a couple days and it'll settle down to it's "real" spot. Also, when checking your own sites, go to Scroogle.org to check. Your cookies on your computer affects your position when you check on your own sites' positions.

You got it because the phrase "dirty smoke" receives very few searches and has little competition. It's easy to rank for a keyword nobody cares about. Tsnyder |

Tsynder, "nobody cares about" sounds a bit harsh. it may be true, but it is my domain name after all.. Dirty Smoke is NOT my target keyword. I have no intention to optimise or monetize this site for that kw. I noticed I was getting traffic through searches on "dirty smoke" and realised that I had #1 spot. I simply wanted to know why I overtook the other site which seems to have way better optimisation for the term "dirty smoke". |

seem to care enough about that phrase to emphasize it and very few people seem to care enough about it to search for it. The fact that it is your domain name is probably enough to get you the ranking since... as I said... nobody seems to care about it. Tsnyder

The information I am gathering is not for dirty smoke, it's for another web project i am working on in which the domain name is the exact keyword I am looking to overtake.

From an analytical standpoint... Your domain name is the only one optimized on the first page. You have 11 backlinks to page reported by Market Samurai, where the second spot has 32, not a huge difference. Even though you claim it is not optimized for the keyword, you have multiple instances of the phrase "dirty smoke" on the page, plus the auxilary term "dirty smoker" even more times, as part of your signature. Your title, and heading are optimized for the keyword. Continuing on, while there are approximately 101,000 competing pages, only 8000 are using the term dirty smoke in their titles. The keyword phrase is searched only about 50 times per day, so not a big target for competitors. There is no adwords traffic. Factor in the newness factor...and you are now #1. From your personal standpoint, it is a good start to your site. You now have one phrase you are working great on, and can continue to use factors like mentioned above, to target more phrases to keep expanding the terms you rank highly on and can capture traffic from. |

Kansas Dragon nailed it completely. The tool I use is showing that 6 of the top 10 sites have a PR of 0 and 6 of them show 0 backlinks, the others show only a couple and then the one with 30. This combined with your domain name and relative content, and you got a great spot. |

Why not turn it into a Stop smoking theme site and sell stop smoking products, ebooks, etc. since you already have the spot use it.

This is my opinion regarding your accidental success: 1. Your domain name contained your main keyword. 2. The competition for the keyword was low. 3. Your content and website was somehow fully optimized for your keyword. -Shaun |

Come on people, if anyone thinks that dirty smoke is a real keyphrase, then man are you smoking something. I could buy xyandz.com and rank #1 the first day for xyandz and again, the point is?!? Quote:

Who ever said I was going to sell stop-smoking products? if I wanted to do that I would have reflected that desire in my domain name. This is a blog to help people quit smoking but not through products necessarily, and I do not want to market this for money making. I have other websites for that; this is a personal blog. I was only asking how i beat out a bigger website and then people start criticising me for my choice in domain name. Ouch, guys. By this logic the people over at Gizmodo made a big mistake for not registering "techgadgets.com", for as "gizmodo" is not a popular keyword. But I forgot that stiff SEO minded people leave out no room for branding. *ahem* Nice sparring with you all, your information was very helpful |
