I have a site which, some months ago, dropped considerably in Google rankings. I had #1 for some longer tail keyword position #3 for the main keyword. This site makes a good chunk of my income. Anyway, the site dropped and behaved really weird after i did some backlinking a while ago...and since yesterday the site is up again as if never anything happened before. I am pretty sure that it got penalized for something (profile backlinks???) since it might be exactly 2 or 3 months now...and i think that google has such time frames where a site is penalized and then "released again", usually a couple or three months as far as i know. Anyway it really, really makes you realize how you are depending on things which often are not under your control, which is often the case in IM. |

Google IS too powerful. I guess you have to make your site so relevant and so popular, that google has no choice but to index you on the first page.

You really need to watch out for bad link sources. Some automated software can do more harm than good if there's a footprint of spam. Last year I purchased a bookmarking generation tool from a big marketer, for example, but every time I tried it on a site that site dropped like a stone from rankings. You really need to watch out and test first on minor sites before you use for a whitehat site. |

Having your sites ranking changed seemingly at random on a bad google day and the subsequent change in income is extremely frustrating. About the only thing I found works is to ignore the changes and focus on white hat link building and SEO. |

If you do angela backlinking technique (the profile links) you can get into trouble. Note that other Angela backlinking is ok and will work, but those profile linking techniques are red flags. Those are seen as thin links and Google picks up on that. They do a re-shuffle then on your site. Luckily your site had other backlinks before and already ranked, so you can be glad it wasn't a new site that got dropped into darkness for good! |

This is so true. There are a lot of times in IM where things out of your control can have major effects on your income. Just the other day one of my hosting companies shut down one of my hosting plans. This hosting plan had about 10 websites on it. After a week of back and fourth communication they admitted they had made a mistake and put my sites back online. Something as silly as this cost me over $1000 in lost sales. I guess the moral is to make sure they we are not reliant on any one source of income, because with the internet, it can all go in a day... For absolutely no reason as well. |

My mantra is "Google Ain't Stupid" if you try to fool Google at some point you will get found out. When that happens they will most likely get the big stick out then all the legitimate techniques you used will be wasted.

What I've learned over the years is that Google loves and will always love great quality and relevant content! In most of the cases number of backlinks will grow accordingly and "on autopilot". Of course building quality backlinks helps. Marian |

I totally agree about Google. But we nearly all use it every day. If we don't vote with our feet, then we can't moan really?
