Yeah this is great material but you have to remember that you should spend 20% of your time worrying about all the SEO stuff and 80% of your time creating great content. If you create great content all the other stuff will take care of itself

Billian, sorry but I have to disagree with the 3rd-4th positions getting more clicks. The 2nd positioned website on the SERPs maybe, when it has a more targeted and well written title tag and description it can get more clicks than the top ranked website.

What are those studies you've read? Can you share them here?

Hi, I'm new to this whole online business thing and i was wondering what's the best way to help generate good real traffic to a website

So far I've been looking into plus ones alot, and I can see a big change in the traffic towards my site, and I have made alot of sales.

Any other suggestions of things I can use ? Sorry if this seems a bit amateur of a question to ask

The website I used for plus ones is called plusonesgold.com, and it was pretty cheap for what I got.

I also looked at socialmonkey.com for backlink building ? suggestions ?

Regards

I've often thought the reason why the top position wouldn't necessarily get the most visits and I believe that screen real estate plays a part - I find my self clicking in the middle of the list of the SERPs when I'm working on larger resolution screens. But then I make a point of clicking through a few pages, and not limiting myself to the first page...

I don't know if there are any studies, it's just an instinct...

A quick question:
how can you tell if your article has been indexed on google?
i submitted a unique article (diff from the one that appears on my website) on the top article directories with different titles, now if I google the article name it wont show up on google.

Just the one I submitted on ezinearticles is showing up, and its not linked to the article page directly, but to a summary page of ezinearticles. is this normal?? how can u tell if ur article has been indexed?

Studies show that the top results are spread like this for the top 3 ranks - give or take (according to Market Samurai research)

#1 - 43%
#2 - 17%
#3 - 9%

By the bottom of page one you are down to around 3-5%.

Over 75% of clicks go to page one!

We often assume what we do is what the average consumer will do. This is not true at all, and it is really important we test and track the common user.

Totally agree. SEO just appears complicated, but because people often do nothing and just think about it too much, they think that it is either difficult or a black art!

Essentially SEO is made up of many things, but ultimately it comes down to two factors
1) Build pages
2) Get links

Word out the nitty gritty in between as you go.

Is SEO spam, bull****, dead etc.? Who knows. The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, BBC etc. certainly don’t think so. They practice SEO like most of other website owners. Last time I checked all the people who blame SEO for global warming, the Iraq war, the global economic crisis have optimized their websites according to SEO techniques. By the numbers SEO is booming all the time for several years a in a row. A page that has what you're looking for is then created for you and displayed in your browser. Unfortunately, that type of page will not be accessible by the search engines because it doesn't actually exist on the server. If there are specific pages that are created through specific search criteria that many people would be looking for on your site, those are the ones you should create links to in your site navigation and your site map.

I am grateful for this information and appreciate all the initial entries and the feedback that follows.

Can anyone address this issue?

My partner has been doing all the SEO work for our site. He got us to the first page for a number or our keywords and then we decided our next step should be social bookmarking. We started using OnlyWire to help with the posts. In one week we submitted 3 posts. Then, almost overnight, we found that none of our keywords were on page 1 of Google anymore. In fact, some of them are beyond page 3!

He doesn't feel it's a sandbox issue but we don't know what it is. Are there any suggestions as to how to quickly recover that ground?

Andy, this is excellent piece of work and I'll add my thanks to those already posted. I noticed that you talk about pinging backlinks using pingler, pingomatic etc. I have had much better results since using Linklicious - i.e. the links actually get crawled.

Do you (or others) have a view on this?

After 12 years in the internet marketing arena Google is still foreign to me in many ways. Anyone got answers for these questions and perhaps can help me do them with some of my sites?
1) If you type in Google "San Diego Printers" the first result is a company called ww.sdprinters.com. Well underneath their link are links to pages in their site.
2) Anyone got experience dealing with a google merchant account. I am looking to list the products for google, and I see you have to setup a feed, anyone got experience with Google Merchant Services?
3) Who has a good tutorial on doing page titles and meta tags for google, I consider myself pretty good at it but I am not getting the rankings I am looking for.

I am really trying to master and understand Google more, all my sites are legit sites, not marketing sites so I feel with relevant content I should be ahead of the game. Is there a google tutorial out there?

thanks

if I may say, I love the Internet marketing game, as I wish I knew how to do things online in terms of publishing and web marketing 10 years ago. Back then, I was just getting knowledge of what affiliate marketing was, and knew nothing about dedicated service, having your own website, blogging, online forum communities, and all that other stuff. Today, although I don't have my Masters degree from college, I am humbled and grateful for the "Internet education" I do have, in learning from people in warrior forum, as well as other places on the Internet, how to be better in search engine optimization, as well as Web publishing efforts. Looking forward to completing my college education momentarily :-)

Default SEO: How To Increase Traffic (and keep it; tsk! tsk!)

When I have a question about Google and SEO, I try to minimize the problem. Let's say there are 10 pages of unique content on the some subject to appear in top result for some keyword. Why should Google give you credit and not 9 others? Hmm... let's see...

Remember this: things you are in control of as a web master are less important than things you are not in control of as a web master. Anyone can create unique content. Just write a lot of random words and stuff paragraphs with keywords. It doesn't really matter that much. And why should it?

People would never use Google if that's the kind of unique content people would find when they are searching. Google is well aware of these types of manipulations, more so than many people realize...

This makes sense because Google certainly doesn't want you to control your own success. Their job is to determine a set of circumstances and behavior patterns that validate your content as relevant to the entered keywords.

From my personal experience, here are some of the realizations I made over a period of time that matter if you want to build traffic:

+1 point for Your content is unique
Yes, it's a plus, but so what? Most content is unique anyway! So it's not that important if we really think about this...

I would say that the following is more important:
+1 point for Relevant content. (Relevance is determined by anchor text, I'll get back to this later, that's the key rule for Google, because ideally the web master does not have control over anchor text. Other people use anchor text to describe your website, not you.)
+1 point Backlinks are more important than your content.
+1 point The content of the page you are backlinked from must be relevant.
I am sure Google pays attention to this, too.
+1 point A site about cheese links to a site about cars Ok, still counts, but not as good as:
+2 point A site about cars links to a site about cars
I came to the realization above after I noticed that they actually can determine what your website is about, what its niche is, without you supplying them any information directly. They have a tool that shows advertisers what the site is about. And somehow, they determine that. Yes, it's to do with your keywords, but other things as well.
+1 point There are keywords in the title of the page you are linking from
+1 point post 100 links back to your site in 1 day
+100 points post 1 link every day for 100 days, every other day
Do you really think that Google doesn't know that it's possible to backlink 1 site in 1 day with 10000 links using robots? Sure they do! So, they take TIME in consideration. I assure you that they absolutely do. But if they don't, they are stupid. I don't think Google is stupid.

+1 point backlink anchor stackability
This one I invented myself after observations... What I mean by this is... let's say 10 sites links back to your site as
{a href = "yoursite"}car{/a}
and another 5 site links back to your site as
{a href = "yoursite"}red{/a}
This helps your web page to be more relevant for "red car", because you get +10 for "car" and +5 for "red".
I am a software engineer myself and have thought about these problems from the programming point of view... this looks like a very legitimate idea.

Power of link anchor text
Additionally, many people know this, but if you search for "click here", you will find Adobe.com, because there are so many links saying "click here" pointing to adobe, that Google thinks that what it's about. Is Adobe.com about "click here"? I don't think so. It's about software and products like Illustrator, Photoshop, Flash, etc. But this tells us that anchor text is incredibly powerful above all others.

So, even if you have unique content about anything, as long as there are backlinks that use anchor text... that anchor text will define what the site is about... more than your unique content itself!

I don't know everything about SEO, I am sure there are other important things Google keeps track of I don't know about.

Do you have anything else to add to this list? Would love to hear about your ideas.

Thanks for this helpful information. May I add that Google also counts consistency of back linking.

For example, 100 backlinks posted in 1 day is not the same as,

1 backlink posted every day for 100 days.

The second example is more valuable to Google.

Yap, drip-feed backlinks are always more valuable.

Thanks for the write-up. I also believe that most of the people that aren't successful at SEO are people, who just can't keep building links and working on a site for a time period long enough to get any results (usually a few months).

Consistency is key.

Right that consistency is the key as in SEO one has to be continuous in all the process else others tries continues and our site get the drop in the results. As i have heard from many people that asks that i do not have any change in my site and not any activity still it dropped from before! So this is due to stop the process of the work for the results.
And in SEO the most consistent process is link building which never going to end and which benefited for the long term.

Search engine optimization is a boon for your online business
