Default Meta Geo Tag - What's the verdict?

I'm always looking for one more thing to move my clients up a notch or two in the search rankings. It's pretty easy to get on the first page for "dentist tulsa", but getting to number 1 or 2 is a challenge for the larger cities.

Who has used the Geo Meta tags successfully? Do the search engines really put any weight on it? Is is worth the minor effort to include them?

<META name="geo.region" content="us-stateabbrevhere">
<META name="geo.placename" content="cityhere">

Anyone have any real, tested, proven results?
