Theme really important in links directory?

The Zeus link manager software makes a big deal about themes... that your link directory (or Resources list or whatever you call it) needs to hang together around a theme.

My understanding (which is new and still forming) is that link pages are really about gathering page rank for spiders and not really for human visitors.

So... should I worry about themes or just seek out the best links I can find for my link partner directory?

If you do NOT think the links page is for visitors - what do you think Google thinks of the page? Cr*p - do you really think Google is going to give you or your link partners any juice?

Backlinks from link directories do work.

If Google finds you are participating in link exchanges you will get penalised;

Google Webmaster Guidelines says: "Don't participate in link schemes designed to increase your site's ranking or PageRank. In particular, avoid links to web spammers or "bad neighborhoods" on the web, as your own ranking may be affected adversely by those links."

They also removed the paragraph about getting links from Yahoo Directory, etc.

Many paid directories have had their Page Rank slashed.

Link exchanges are too risky these days. While some work, some will damage your ranking. Try to build quality links through articles and forum posting rather than using link exchanges.
