How do RSS and RSS Aggregators Help?

My question is related to medium or large Adsense sites. How does RSS help? Sorry if this is a basic question, but I don't see how it benefits an Adsense site, but I don't want to miss out. So if anyone can shed some light on this for me, it would be much appreciated. Obviously I want to get good traffic to my site, but doesn't RSS defeat the purpose by distributing my content elsewhere? Can aggregators drive traffic my sites?
