Default Advice on picking a new domain should i go `brand name` or not ?

Hi guys,

Yep i`m one of these guys into xfactor - clickbump adsense sites but i like to build large sites not the one or two articles sites.

So today i`m going to start a adsense site for a popular household product lets say its `gas cookers` and i will be building quite a large site on these cookers. Now in the past i have found a exact domain to give me a good start in the serps so after doing some keyword research today i have two keywords ready for my first articles so now i need to pick a domain name for the site.

Should i go with a brand name like `hotpointcookers.com` or a open domain name like `slimlinecookers.com`

As you can see hotpoint is a brand name and gets 19000 searches per month and slimline cookers gets 9000 searchs.

I could either start the site with the brand name domain and nearly 20,000 searchs for the exact keyword in the domain and add slimline cookers as a article, or start the site with the domian slimlinecookers with 9000 searches and add hotpoint cookers as a article.

Which way would you guys go please give me some advice guys,

Cheers Jim

There isn't really any right or wrong way to approach it.

Using brand names in your domains is more risky though, since some companies may make an attempt to take the domain from you for brand name / trademark infringement or some other legal excuse.

I will say this though. If hotpoint make slimeline cookers, addding the hotpoint keywords to your slimelinecooker site won't look as weird as adding pages about other brand slimeline cookers to a sit with hotpoint in the domain.

And if a company are going to grumble about using their brand name in your domain, you can bet they're going to be 10 times more likely to do it if you're advertising OTHER manufacturers products on that site.

I hope that makes sense.

Hi yep i understand your points and i really want to start the site `open` by picking slimlinecookers as the domian but i do know that for low comp keywords a exact domain helps ALOT to start a site off i know some may argue here about exact domain and for high comp it wont work let alone the fact you cannot get a high comp keyword for exact domain.

But i just cannot decide if its best to go with the open keyword for the domain with just 9000 searches or the brand name keyword with 20000 as i know that which ever domain i choose the other keyword will take more work to rank.

I would definitely 100% advise against it. I have had a legal threat before which I settled by asking the Registrar to delete the domain altogether. There is nothing to stop the company from suing you straigtaway for damages. If you need anymore convincing, read this

If people spent as much time on stuff that matters instead of on
stuff that does not matter, half the threads in this forum would
not be needed.

I'm not sure who teaches this or where people get it from.

There is no magical way to choose a domain. It's not that easy.

Hardwork, backlinks, quality, relevant content.

Too many people spend more time on other things.

Paul

Interesting question, isn’t it ?
Generally speaking, you need a domain to put your blog, sales page, message, or whatever on the internet, don’t you?
Of course you can use a variety of free web 2.0 style websites such as blogger.com, squidoo.com, hubpages.com, etc but to have full control over your content, you really need your own domain.

Did you know there is another option?
Buying a “second hand” domain, or an aged domain as they are referred to.
This is a domain that has been registered by another person, and for whatever reason, they have decided not to renew it. The domain registrars (Godaddy, etc) offer these “soon to expire” domains for sale to people like you and me (if you know where to look).
