I am in the process of creating a "mini network" of sites and will be using them as a means of backlink building for my money site in addition to using them to promote products. I don't want to host wordpress blogs with my current hosting plan, because I want each site in this "mini network" to have its own IP. I am curious if anyone has noticed any difference in the quality of backlinks one gets from a site that is hosted on wordpress.com vs. a wordpress blog hosted on your own hosting account? |

All things being equal, many sites linking to you from different IP's will be worth more than having them all come from the same or same set of IP's. Be careful about that plan to build a network of sites for the purpose of building links to another site. That can be some thin ice with respect to Google. |

We build WordPress blogs on our own IP addresses and have had good success with back links. I agree watch out with the linking between sites that you own. Create a linking plan that does not have reciprocal links between these sites. |

I recently listened to a podcast that touched on this issue of using blogspot or one of those versus hosting on your own. I think it was Colin McDougle talking about it, but can't remember for sure. Anyway, whoever it was suggesting hosting on your own server vs. using the freebees. Not sure how I feel about that, but just letting you know how one of the "experts" thinks. - Russ

From an SEO perspective you should take domain authority/trust into account. There are differing opinions on this, but some evidence suggests that subdomains benefit partially from the authority and TrustRank of the root domain. Wordpress is a very high PR domain, so there may be some inherent benefit to being on a WP subdomain. |
