I was working extremely hard on building this one keyword up to the top of Google for about 2 months straight. It got to number 12 pretty quickly, but it didn't budge a spot for the next 2 months. I decided I was going to stop backlinking to that url and focus on some other things on hand. I ended up forgetting completely about it due to having a lot of projects on my hands. Well, it's been about 2 months since I threw a backlink or did anything for this site and to my surprise this morning I'm ranking number 2 for my desired keyword. It's a nice feeling to see that the hardwork actually paid off. I was starting to think this was just going to be one of those lemon keywords. Travis |

Google values history of a website, so it may just be that it became more "trusted" because time passed.

Good news. But sometimes it can be just a google dance. Also note that if you re logged in to your webmaster/analytics account from the same PC then it will show top results. Also, it would be cool if we could know the keywords.

It takes some time to get up in the ladder in the SERP for a particular keyword no matter how hard you build backlinks specially if it has a higher competition. Build backlinks constantly, add content in a frequent manner and let the Google do the rest. Like your case, you will be amazed by the results |

Sweet! I love it when stuff like that happens. Also, this is a a good reminder that you don't get results from your SEO efforts overnight. Lee |

I think it happened because of these two reasons. 1. Google found rest of the links pointing to your site. 2. Old links gain more power as link age does matter. Older the links, More power they will gain. |

| Yes good point! I made the fatal mistake of thinking I was ranked in the top 10 for a particular keyword when in reality I was just logged into my webmaster account. BTW, does anybody know why google show you false top 10 listings when you're logged into your webmaster account?

It's because of the 'universal search' feature, based on your web history and preferences. Enabled by default on Google now.
