If all other factors off page and on page where basically the same, would a ".com" website do any better then a ".ca" website?

I think a .com would probably perform better than a .ca, the only domain extensions on a par with .com in my opinion would be a .net or a .org.

I have done a quick google and I cannot seem to find info supporting/against .ca domains. I cannot be the first person to ask.

What extension you use has no effect. This is called SEO by feelings. I feel, so it must be true. That pertains to .com, .org, .info, etc. Anyone who says this is not true, is doing SEO by feelings. The dot ca is different than .com, .org, .info, etc. Very different. Are you located in Canada? Are you looking for Canadian visitors? There is no reason to have a dot ca extension unless you are looking for Canadian visitors only. I'm not even sure you can get a dot ca without showing some relevance to Canada. Because a .ca is geotargeted, that alone would hurt it worldwide. So, in this respect, a .ca may be chosen over a .com only if it's geo-specific. Maybe. A dot com with worldwide appeal, would probably on occasion outrank a Canadian specific site. There are a lot of what ifs. But nobody can say that any extension (except for .cc) gets special treatment overall. Paul |

You can target a .ca for anything as well, as it may show up outside of Canada. If you are targeting Canada, and have a Canadian site, you probably want a .ca. That's why google has google.ca, specifically for Canada. But I could do a search for a site that is targeting Canada from anywhere in the world, and a .ca might show up. For country specific (Canada), you really need a .ca. Obviously, if no relevant .ca's are in the mix, the next best site with any extension will show up. When I do a search from my home computer, in California, using google.com, for Canadian Parliament, I get a .ca as #1. Makes no difference in that and many cases what extension you use. The most relevant site to google has a .ca no matter what. The next site is .org, wikipedia. The next next one is a dot com, huffingtonpost.com. Consider this: do a search for: toronto maple leafs All the top ten are dot coms. do a search for: toronto maple leafs fans the top spot is a .ca Relevancy is all that matters in the end, and where you are searching. Do these searches from google.ca, and more .ca's will show up overall. Paul Paul |
