Exactly. Create a lot of anchor targeted backlinks to your website/page and you can outrank wikipedia for your targeted keywords. I have outranked amazon for product keyword phrases many times. Most of these big websites rank because of the domain authority but they generaly don't have a lot of external backlinks to specific pages so there is a chance for internet marketers.

For celebs and stuff like that, it can be darn impossible
and not even worth trying. What I mean is searches
for stuff like exact names of singers, celebs, movies,
songs, etc. Tossing in an extra word can get you above
wikipedia. Remember most searches are not 1 or 2 words,
so even though you can't outrank for elvis presley,
you could outrank for elvis presley trivia, or other such
combination. Just don't try and rank for searches where
wikipedia is probably the default #1.

In reality, there is no need to try and beat wikipedia.

Example: Lauren Conrad.
But people search for lauren conrad hair. Guess whose
lens is on the first page, wikipedia nowhere to be found?

It seems too hard to beat wikipedia if using keyword. However, if you try on long tails keywords, then the task is being more easy. One of my keyword get listed at #2 for 1 year plus which just beated by wikipedia. And know what, i just leave the keyword for go for other keywords

I agree with Paul. Wikipedia has great, detailed information about that keyword if it ranks at the No.1 spot. It's not impossible, but it's going to be very tough. You should try to rank for another variant of the keyword too, much easier and MAY have quite an amount of search.

I don't know about you guys but I love Wikipedia with its quick {sometimes slightly faulty} and often reasonably in depth information on just about anything, appearing at or near the top of search results when I go searching for info on something. I usually start at Wikipedia and then from there seek out more in depth websites and articles if I need further info.

So, Google in my opinion has got their act together on this one. Especially considering that wikipedia is a user-generated collaborative effort.

Process to outrank wikipedia is same what is used to outrank other competitors. You need to analyze how strong it is for a particular keyword and for what keywords wikipedia is weak.

1. Check backlinks to wiki page you want to outrank with backlinkwatch.com. What is anchor text of backlinks. What keyword is in url and title.

Here is an example

For phrase Hard Money Loans wikipedia is at # 2 because it is not very strong for that phrase. Instead its position is strong for Hard Money Loan and Hard Money. Phrase is neither in the title nor in url. Only a few backlinks to that page has anchor text Hard Money loans. Most are linked using other anchor texts.

Like Hard Money Loans wiki's position is weak for hard money lender and hard money lending.

2. If others have outranked wikipedia, you can also outrank it.

I've seen imdb.com outranks a number of times over Wikipedia. So it's not impossible.
