Default Adsense - Do you think that link units work well than Text Ads?

Hello Guys,

I've embedded adsense with my press release distribution website. As you know, the website is just 4 months old and which is doing great. I'm getting around 300 page views a day and 20-30 new press releases.

Coming to the point. The adsense units I was using was two 160X600 units in both sides (top left and top right) when I started the service. But it could give me clicks very rarely. Then people adviced me to put ads inside the content so I've placed a text link on top of the content just below the title and the revenue began to increase and reached 2-4 clicks and 1.5$ minimum a day.

But when I searched on adsense support forum every one is talking about link units. So I removed the right side ad unit and put a link unit just below the header, yesterday. Though the revenue is still 2$ per day. The number of clicks had increased. I've got 6 clicks yesterday from the link unit.

I would like to know what you think about the diff ad units and please advice me about the better ad positioning. (find the site in my signature to see how the ads are positioned now)

Thanks.

It's always hard to say. The only times I have had real success with link units is when I can blend them into the top/bottom of a menu and people I guess think they are part of the menu maybe? It's hard to say what you will do best with. I have a site that gets 300 uniques/day and makes me $10 - $14 a day while I have another site getting 500 - 600 people a day and I'm lucky to get a click! Depends on the people on your site, as well as ad targeting so it's really hard to say for you.

Hello matt,

as you know most of the webmasters are 'ad blinds' so they wont click on ads. Unfortunately a press release website 'd be mostly for webmasters. I wonder how you make 14$ with 300 uniques. Might be with high paying keywords.

And about your link unit - isn't it a violation of adsense TOS to misleading visitors? Sorry I'm not sure about that - adsense banned one site of mine coz I put ads just below the site title. That's why.

Yeah, I hope to do some optimization for the high paying keywords of the available releases with the website. Hope that 'd bring more clicks and more earnings :P

if I were you I'd only put one large rectangle somewhere under the headline and play with font sizes, fonts because the less ads - the more they pay usually.

You're right it can be against the TOS depending how you do it. I'm just talking in the general area!

Also, I know what you mean with webmasters being blind to the ads, but the site I'm talking about is nowhere near that audience.

I have also found that the CPC can actually be quite low compared to my other sites. It gets around 1,000 - 1,500 impressions daily though, so that could be why.

Also take this into account that your content is top-notch and not just filler.
Also use adsense competative ad-filter for a better CPC rate !
This would dramatically improve CPC .

I find blending the ads into your colour scheme helps things. Using a heatmap such as click heat will give you an idea where people are clicking on your site.

Search Google for a list of websites to put in your competitive ad filter on your adsense account. Some people have noticed an increase of cost per click, others haven't. I noticed an increase at first but then went back to normal with time, so I got rid of the list. You might want to try it.

I don't think link unit placement can put you the firing line re TOS, even if it is below nv menu in sidebar.

A link unit is just that, it's not an ad so the user has to click through to even reach the ads. Even IF your link unit placement somehow unwittingly 'fooled' someone to click it. They still have to make the decision to click the clearly marked ads they come across when once they've clicked thru.

I think link units are pretty safe, but I'm sure there is a way to get into trouble..........if you try hard enough

Actuall it depends on yoru niche and not the style of your ads. if you have better traffic and niche then you will get nice income from the adsense

The best thing to do is to test yourself.

But from my experience, link units are not very profitable.
Text ads brought in more revenues across every niche I
have tested the two.
