Default Significant ranking delay????

Hi guys,

We all know how it works.

We put up a quality site with quality content and then we get it indexed and build quality links... Previously, I used to build links, wait a good 2 or 3 weeks for Webmaster tools to pick them up (Google that is), and then after another period of 2 to 3 weeks, it seems Google started to consider my links for ranking purposes and then my site started to fly up..

However this period has seem to become longer... Anyone notice anything similar?

Don't use Google Webmaster Tools for link analysis, it gives you only a sample of your links. Use Yahoo Site Explorer (preferably with SEOquake or a similar plugin) and Open Site Explorer in addition.

Things get much more competitive the closer to the top you get. Cheap SEO (such as blog comments or forum posts) creates the illusion that it works well because it moves you up from, say, #300 to #30 (which seems like a lot but is not). And then it stops working less and less and less and less well, till you realize you need some powerful links.

Thanks Philip,

Your always on hand in the SEO sector to help us!

I have always found that links get found by Yahoo and Google quickly in their index, however it takes Google webmaster ages to pick up the links in my account, and then further more for any type of movement.. Have you done any analysis on this type of thing?

The keyword I am after isnt massively competitive, but it can be very very profitable, so the linking competition isnt really comprehensive.

If you can mine lucrative low-competition niche keywords, you are golden. It is getting harder and harder to do so though. Even when there's a genuine niche that in and of itself is highly competitive, sites in other niches compete for your keywords. Search is filling up pretty fast. What isn't competitive today can become hugely competitive tomorrow: this happens to numerous markets every year. There is, of course, a big advantage to getting in early and keeping up, since that's your headstart.

Curiously, SEO is more and more evolving away from being a product and into a service. It used to be: you pay us, we rank you, your rankings are the product. Now it's more typically: we rank you while you pay us, your rankings are the service. SEO is becoming more like AdWords in this regard, with the difference that your monthly profits from AdWords don't keep growing indefinitely while those from SEO can as your backlinks add up.
