I'm on the fence as to whether or not this would be "cheating or not" I have come accross a .edu domain that has a forum on it that looks like it has been abandoned. It is a dofollow forum and the marketers of naughty things are all over it like Lindsay Lohan on a bottle of single malt whiskey. Being that the forum is abandoned and not being used for its intended purpose is it still considered blue-shart to get some .edu backlinks while I can? |

.edu backlinks are not inherently stronger just by virtue of their TLD. It is not the .edu extension that is important, it just a function of a .edu sites that they are generally stronger in general. However, getting a low quality link from an .edu domain is still a low quality link, regardless of the extension. The only thing that makes an .edu link desirable is that, in general, .edu links are harder to get, more controlled, more relevant, and by nature, usually more authoritative. In general, an edu link will carry some weight, but like any link, that isn't always true if the link is on a page that doesn't have any relevance or authority. of course, that doesn't mean another link is a bad thing, just dont expect it to make a big difference by itself. |

"A link is a link is a link" may be true. If so, then it's also true that "there are links and then there are links." If you are looking at an abandoned forum filled with crap links, the .edu extension won't save it from being tagged as a link farm. While such a link won't necessarily harm you, it probably won't help you much either. |

Link-directories are "link-farms".. Will google know every single directory - I don't think so.. And if google hate these farms, I could... Create 100 linkfarms and put my competitiors links on those farms and expect them to get slammed to page "what ever" ? | |

Sites that link to you cannot harm you, plain and simple. Sites that you link to can harm you. |

It can't hurt SEO wise, however it likely won't do much if anything. And if this forum IS being frequented by spammers, if you place a link on there that spammer traffic will pick your link up and may follow it. So if your site has interactive sections of it I'd be wary of doing this.

It's better to get quality links otherwise you're just wasting your time.

As I said above it's not worth the bother. There are plenty of other opportunities.
