Stupid SEO Mistakes

Its amazing how many basic and very bad SEO mistakes I continue to see, every single day. I was thinking of building a naming and shaming list of dodgy SEO service providers but they provide us with so much opportunity its best I stay quiet on the issue. Whats the biggest SEO rip off you know of care to post it here? Here are two I have encountered over the last week.

Case #1 - Client pays 10k for a Joomla template and top SEO position for 2 keywords - not competitive at all. 1 year later client is not in the top 100 and provider has gone MIA...

Case #2 - Client pays over 20k development costs for ASP website & SEO plus 1k per month ongoing maintenance & SEO. Upon inspection we found no meta tags at all in the site and broken internal pages all over the place. Provider has taken over 2 months now to address the issue. Backlinks have been built but the on page is so bad Google has removed toolbar PR... Provider has client locked into contract so they are in no rush...

And so it goes....

Those do sound like some problematic cases, but at the same time I will say that talking about SEO can be similar to talking about politics sometimes.

This always happens when we are doing SEO services for clients. Both "seller" and "buyer" have to face with simple mistakes without awareness.

Maybe I should learn to do SEO, at those prices. I guess if it is done right with the right keywords, it pays. But it is just criminal for a company to charge that much and just not bother to deliver. I guess it pays to know who you are dealing with.

Sorry I don't have any examples. My experience in thie area is non existant.

Well, I believe in results, and for a provider it is necessary to have a structure or plans according to the keyword competition. As there are many clients I have seen who wants keyword ranking on the top position for the most competitive keywords very quickly but, it is not possible, as there is time estimated for such keywords like may be 6 months or more then that.

But, it is important to make a right deal and a bit negotiation if required, to avoid such mistakes.

I'm confused as to where the "mistakes" you talk about are?

Case 1 - has nothing to do with poor SEO work, they just took the money and ran.

Case 2 - Meta tags? You think leaving out something Google ignores is bad SEO?

You may be right but these are not mistakes..these are done knowingly.The company has fooled its clients.

Sorry I will make it simpler for you, case one was sold a package that included a website and SEO position, the site was a mess in terms of on page factors. Case two - Very basic stuff when I talk meta I'm including titles and descriptions, broad strokes of the brush I know. Anyway last time I checked they were still an important ranking factor, I was making a long story short as there were many other basic errors.
