In my Adwords campaign I've got some keywords indicating that the average position is 5-6 out of 11 on the first page, but then it tells me I'm not bidding enough to get on the first page. I'm getting impressions and clicks, but my ad definitely isn't showing up on the first page. And idea as to why??

First, there are not 11 positions on the first or any page. There can be up to 11 ads on a page. There can be 0 to 3 ads above the SERPS (on top left, in the yellow box as some say) and a maximum of 8 ads on the right side. The first page minimum bid estimate is based on your QS. Since your QS is different than someone else's, the FPB will be different. It also appears that the FPB does not take geography into account. As well, it appears that paused keywords are figured into the calculation. What this means is that, if someone in the UK bids on the same keyword, even though you may advertise only in AZ and he in UK, his QS and bid affect the FPB calculation. I know, it shouldn't be this way but Google has to make some concessions, otherwise the calculation would be too complicated. Also, if a keyword is paused in someone's account, it also figures into the calculation. After all, that advertiser can un-pause at any time. You then have advertisers pausing and unpausing campaigns all the time, campaigns running only during certain times and days and you have a very complicated calculation. That's why it's called an estimate and why you see strange things as you mention. My suggestion is, if you're happy with what you see (impressions and clicks even on page two), don't pay attention to the FPB. Same if you are on the first page but the FPB suggests you should not be there. Manage the campaign to get the results you want, whether that's a CPC goal or a position goal. |
