Default I want to add a pop under ad on my Adsense site

I would like to put a pop under or exit popup on my adsense site. The thing is that I don't want to harm my CTR or do anything that violates the adsense TOS. any ideas?

Hi ronmojohny,

Just don't do it!

Not only is it a scummy thing to do, it violates AdSense's TOS, Google Webmaster Guidelines and it provides a poor user experience for your website visitors.

Think about your visitors: Would you return to shop in a store if the sales clerks blocked the exits whenever you tried to leave without making a purchase. No, you would probably be offended and demand authorities to put a halt to such offensive practices. Doing it in a online scenario is no different.

Don, this site is a MFA site that visitors click away and never come back anyway. And I don't think it's against Google's TOS as long as the popup doesn't contain adsense ads, right?

Hi ronmojohny,

Stop what you are doing and read the Adsense Program Policies! It specifically states the following:

Quote:
Sites showing Google ads should be easy for users to navigate. Sites may not change user preferences, redirect users to unwanted websites, initiate downloads, include malware or contain pop-ups or pop-unders that interfere with site navigation.
In my experience, they don't "sort of" mean what they say, they really mean exactly what they say. If you try to parse their policy to fit your own desires, you are only asking for trouble, IMO. They don't seem to appreciate having their tolerances tested very much either, so if you test them too much you will likely lose your account.

I don't suggest anything here, but how in the world could this happen?

pop-unders that interfere with site navigation
If it's a pop-under, well it's got to be below the browser/navigation, right?

Any popup or pop-under that is not initiated intentionally by the user is interference. I believe you are attempting to parse the meaning of their policies to fit your desires. Perhaps you can get away with it, if you sneak it in after a human quality review, though I doubt it.

I've used pop ups on the site before with no problems, (aweber opt-in) and if it's a pop under, they have already left the page, so no interference with site navigation, right?

I parsed what you posted.

Really I could care less & have no desires, about pop-ups or under.

Besides If the page that the pop-up or pop-under is generated from doesn't include Adsense, then Google has nothing to do with anything.

That's like saying I can't link to any site on the net that includes a pop-up, not gonna happen.

Hi ronmojohny,

Popups you explicitly launch by clicking on them are okay, however popups that launch automatically and unexpectedly are not. Pop unders take you to a page that you did not implicitly intend to navigate to, so yes, they do interfere with navigation.

Hi yukon,

It's got nothing to do with the sites you link to, and everything to do with your own site and AdSense policies. It sounds like you are trying to redefine what the meaning of 'is' is.

LOL, is 'is' is or is 'is' "wasup"

If you feel like testing AdSense policies to see what you can get away with go ahead, I'm just cautioning against it. I think you'll find that Google uses there own definitions, and it won't matter to them if you have a different definition, they will still apply their own. It might workout better for you if you understand Google's definitions than if you create own. I'm just saying...

So, what your telling me is, you know more about Adsense than National Geographic webmasters?

They run Adsense & a Netflix pop-under on the same page.

You might want to send them that YT video of Billy, before Google shuts them down, lol?

Hi yukon,

There are three distinct AdSense programs offered by Google. The AdSense Premier program will negotiate special terms and accommodations for the largest publishers. I'm sure that National Geographic is in the AdSense Premier program and has a very different set of rules from the Standard and Standard Plus programs.

I don't mean to undermine your opinions, but you should really listen and learn before you "lol" people who are trying to help you. I'm just saying...

Same here. But I think the word is just cautionary.

Too many people come here and start a thread about losing adsense.
In fact, I'd say the people that start threads about "what ifs..." are
usually looking to tweak the rules. Otherwise, why ask?

Google does make it clear to not try and tweak them. Even if they
do not spell out everything, which they can't, don't take it to mean
that it's okay.

On the surface, a pop under that does not interfere with the site
navigation, which includes surfing out, and does not block the ads
may be okay. But it's got to be borderline. I would not chance it.

Any pop-up, pop-under, whatever you have it, probably takes a new
click to surf away, or at least takes an extra second or two to get
away. If the pop under covered any part of the site, that to me would
be a violation. If the pop under shrunk the site, that too would interfere
with the navigation.

But again, point taken on the "if" part. I just can't come up with a scenario
where a pop under would not interfere at least slightly with surfing in and
out of the site. Not everybody has the same resolution. What may not be
covered on your screen may be covered on mine.

I mean, are you wanting people to click adsense or a pop under ad?
Or even read a pop under?

I'd err on the side of adsense.

I can't come up with a scenario where I would even want a pop under
on an adsense site.

yukon - Best of luck with the pop under ad. I don't know if people like National Geographic CarolineMuellerPhotography have webmasters that help them with these kinds of things, but I am all about giving it your all when you are trying to better market your business. All the best!

Yeah Yukon! Listen up!

LOL!!!!!!!!!!! The WF is being hit with spambots and that one is
too darn funny!

Google allows a popup on an adsense site, so long as it does not
interfere with navigation. Like those netflix popups that seem to
be everywhere.

If the popunder halts the surfer from surfing away without clicking,
then that would appear to violate TOS.
