Default Is It Still Advisable to Subconsciously "Irritate" Your Customers on Adsense Sites?

I remember a while back that people were very much into "irritating" layouts for their sites. Colors and visual tweaks that would subconsciously irritate the visitor so that they would only read the opening few paragraphs of your content and then feel compelled to click off of the site just to escape it's (unknown to them) oppressive setup.

I have not heard so much about that now. It seems more along the lines of a streamlined site that is well put together and has ads that are better integrated so that they pull the same results as the "irritation" method.

Today, however, I was looking through one of my Wordpress review sites and ran a search. I noticed that I had not integrated any ad block between the results and put that on my to-do list, but then I also noticed that my basic query resulted in a lot of frivolous results.

The main article that I had run the search for was #4 in the results, which I found a bit "irritating". I thought it should be #1. Then I wondered if I should leave the search setup as-is because my visitors might get "irritated" too an click off through an ad somewhere on the page.

What's your thoughts on this Warriors?

I always hate questions about behaviors with ads, because even though I make money on ads and adsense... I personally avoid clicking ads. I hate them. Rarely have I ever clicked on and usually it is because I am interested in the IM part of it and want to see that marketer's site.

I would NEVER think to click ANY link on a site that irritated me...I would just hit backspace or ALT-D and type a new URL.

So...I have no idea what all the people that click my Adsense ads would do. LOL

I can see how this might work for a one time visitor but many like for people to come back to their sites.
I guess it would depend upon what you are looking for; Pennies from heaven or a following that you can market to repeatedly even when the traffic does slow down.

Irritating your visitors just so that you can get more clicks is one of the most stupid things you could do on your website. No need to explain why....

These days Google is clamping down on sites where the user experience hasn't been taken into consideration. Not only are you less likely to rank well, but the AdSense team could ban your site should it come under manual review. Minmal sites with limited exit options are one thing, but poor user experience is a different proposition altogether!

I guess that depends on whether you like getting paid for clicks. If you don't, by all means, convince your visitors to not click on your ads.

Don't put words into my mouth. "Convince your visitors to not click on your ads"...yeah right.

Why not set up a one page site...and fill it with Adsense all around a tiny bunch of text? You're bound to get lots of clicks.

I know and seen it all but it always comes back to quality, and respecting your visitors and your OWN website. Don't insult your visitors and treat them like click robots. One of the many reasons why more and more people are adopting ad blockers, and CTR or CPC has been in constant decline.

If you're going to get as fast away from a site that irritates you, there's no reason why you should treat your visitors like that. There's a line there in the sand between optimization and downright insulting your visitors, and I'm sure you know about it.....
