Experienced LinkBuilders - Could You Rank For This Term?

I have a client who wants to rank for some very competitive keywords. He is willing to start with the longer tail keywords, but wants to wind up with the more general competitive words.

Currently in the top rankings for the keywords would be sites that are PR7 and up with some very high authority sites.

With proper link building could you rank high for very competitive terms using only white hat methods in a timely manner or would it still take years?

    Still to broad of a question. First, naming pr doesnt really explain anything. Most keywords are very competitive..thats the way SEO works. Care to share the keywords? Or elaborate on your explanation..

    Hmmm... Would help to know the backlinks of the competitor vs the backlinks of the client I think in order to make a guess.

    Without knowing the keyword it is impossible for anyone to tell you. I mean that, impossible!

    If the term is "New York Times" then no, I don't see you beating the New York Times on that keyword. However I am sure that the NY times ranks for lots of keywords and can be beaten easy on several of them.

    Find someone who know good SEO analysis and ask them. Generalization based on your OP won't help you.
