And Google tends to rank them pretty well without you ever having to touch them

Google loves Hubpages a lot.

There's an easy method to spot those sites that Google loves.

Manually 'google' highly competitive search terms. Look through top-20 listing to find sites that allow users to post content.

Once you've suspected certain sites, 'google' site:sitename.com to see how many pages of content Google eats. The more the better.

If a site meets these two criteria, you've found a goldmine.

Warning: Make sure the site theme is related to your niche. Provide values to your content. Do not spam.

Hubpages has me a little confused as to whether it's dofollow or nofollow. One of the sites I've been building backlinks to from work has a backlink from Hubpages, but I've tried getting backlinks from Hubpages to other websites and they either never get indexed or are seriously nofollow.

Edit: I checked another of my websites and it also has a backlink from Hubpages. Both links are on hubs with relevant content to the websites. Aside from that I'm not seeing any of my other backlinks from Hubpages showing up for my sites.

All outgoing links have Nofollow attribute.

[ADD] Clarification: I forgot. New pages come with Nofollow.

There's a RSS feed in the page, btw.

Hubpages is overrated. You need a Hubscore of 75 and above to get them to change your backlinks to dofollow. Otherwise, it is nofollow. You need at least a couple of Hubpages ranking in the top 10 of Google for terms that get traffic, in order to get a good Hubscore. Otherwise, you could spend all day and night adding Hubs to their system and waste your time getting nofollow links in return. There are better places elsewhere to spend your energy, IMHO.

I've had my Hubpages compete and even outrank the very own pages I'm trying to rank for (which my Hubpages point to anyway), and that's a problem in general with these Web 2.0 sites - They can compete with your own pages.

But some marketers are very happy living within Hubpages, writing tons of Hubs etc, and consequently sharing their revenue with Hubpages, but this arrangement is not for me.

Don't discredit Hubpages. It takes some efforts to see the results. Once your score burst the barrier, you'll get all the SEO benefits.

I did mentioned in other post about doing words-of-mouth for the sake of SEO. Hubpages is one of those places we can exploit.

I'm not going to reveal much because people seems to disbelieve the simple things I say. Some people especially the link sellers, just want complicated things.

But what about those times when my Hubpages is ranking in top 3 and my own page is ranking way 5 or 10 spots below?

I would rather my own page ranks in the top 3 and my Hubpages ranks 5 or 10 spots below.

I've seen this many times, and that's not good when the Web 2.0 site competes with your own page or site, revenue share or not.

Then you should be careful of your linking structure.
