What is a backlink packet and how does it benefit me?

Ok, I've heard a lot about backlink packets, but not exactly sure what they are. In fact, just about 5-10 minutes ago had someone contact me wanting to get 'Angela's' backlinks, etc.

What exactly are they, and how would they benefit me? Is it just mainly trying to game google (i.e., pr/link juice), or is there something more to it than just that?

In short, it is a list of sites where you can post a link, usually with anchor text, to give your site some baclinks for SEO purposes.

Most of the sites have decent Page Rank, at least on the main domain, that usually will help your link even if it is on a profile page which has no PR.

Ok -- but then -- eventually (as it probably would) -- when the search engines get wind of the fact it is just simply to artifically boost ranks, your listings would drop?
