help... i'm ranked #1 on google

i have a site that suddenly ranked #1 on google for several hot major terms, and #2 for others.

i wasn't ready for this.

can i modify the page right now? or will it have an immediate effect on rankings? any advice on how much i can modify it or what i can modify?

are you certain its not just your personalized settings showing that? typically when people are surprised they got 1st in google, there's something going on. it doesn't just happen without a lot of work. or is your site name the exact term you typed into the search??

What key phrases are you targeting? Because you can be # 1 easily for low searches keywords.

i know i'm #1 because we got a flood of inquiries today. just from people navigating all the way through the contact links-- no easy way to contact us!

got to add an opt-in as fast as possible...

but wondering-- if we add an opt-in box, could it ruin the rankings?

No. It won't affect your ranking as long as you stick with the same key phrases. Add an opt-in box ASAP and offer a valuable gift to build your list.

Before you get too excited wait a day or two, your site might disappear from page one pretty soon - I hope that it doesn't, but this has happened to me in the past.

thanks for the warning-- i know it could... that's why instead of going to bed like i was about to-- i'm stuck trying to figure out how to get an optin box in asap. totally not prepared nor experienced on the backend.

Also, do not be surprised to find that your ranking is temporary, especially if the site is new.

Google often does this temporarily with newer sites. Don't ask me why :P

Yep, that's happened to me too. One of my domains got to #5 in just a few days and I was excited but wondering how it got there with so little work.. Then it totally disappeared for a few days and finally reappeared + settled down on page 2.

the site's been up for months (is that considered new in search engine land?)

i can guess the temporary google boost for brand new sites is to quickly test how popular your site can be, in order to add another facet to their ranking formula

To update anyone who cares about my soap opera...

got an opt-in box in, above the fold! looks pretty ugly compared to the rest of the site, and not standing out much, but hey-- better than nothing for now. hooked up to mailchimp. hooked up to google analytics (i hope... takes awhile to turn on). i'll see what happens in the morning...

Well, that is a good thing but you do not have to be so excited because it might disappear due to the fact that no much work was done in optimizing your site.

I will advice you seek more opinion on this, sometimes ago i had similar challenge and was afraid of making some structural adjustment to my site. Well, a SEO expert adviced me not to mess with my site "title", its the most important thing. I later made the adjustment without altering my site title and it didn't affect my ranking.

Well done for changing it. It had to be done regardless.

It may affect your rankings (let us know if it did and how significantly), but if you achieved that ranking before (not out of luck) then you can achieve it again.

Just make sure you're giving your newly found traffic reasons to stay on your website. It pleases your customers if there is valuable content to be found, and it pleases Google because (in therory) it means they've served up a good website to whoever was searching that keyword. Lastly, that should please you too!

This is very true.

Google sometimes "tests" a page by putting it #1 for a few days and then knocks it back down.

This is known as the Google Dance, though not many people talk about the positive side of the dance

I am hoping it is a permanent ranking for your sake but just don't get too excited yet.

Leave it a couple of weeks.
