Default Does renewing a domain name each year really hurt SE rankings?

I've heard a lot of people saying that they always renew their domains for 3 years or more because it will hurt SE rankings if it's less. Others just renew each year.

Does anyone have any real evidence to support this one way or another or is this whole idea an online myth?

Don't worry about this just make sure your domain is not expiring in less than 1 year.

It is recommended to register a domain at least fro 2 years.

Don't worry about this. It's just one tiny factor among many that affect your ranking. It is barely significant if you are on the ball in the other areas.

Google would not want to penalise most webmasters who naturally register a domain for only one year. After all, there is no guarantee that a website will succeed so I assume that Google understands that website owners cannot necessarily commit to several years for each and every domain upon the initial registration.

What is a good idea is extend for two or more years when you come up to your first renewal.

Yeah, I don't think that will ever create much of an issue unless you let the domain name totally expire. Just have it set for automatic renewal and you will be good to go.

I've never had problems getting sites ranked and I renew most of my domains yearly. Sometimes when I know for a fact that I will be keeping a site for a long time I will renew it for longer, but not often.

Very nice Giles.

The video brightened up a boring evening.

I guess that self same video applies to much of the 'facts' that are provided by many self proclaimed experts in the IM niche.

You can safely renew your domain names each year.

As stated above, the length that you have your domain renewed for would be 1 tiny piece of everything that google takes into consideration when ranking (if they even consider it at all).

I doubt they would penalize you if you only renewed for a year, after all that is probably what most people do.

If it counts for anything than maybe if you renew for more than 1 year you might get some brownie points.

No one really knows for sure but if you were google, how much weight would you put on it?

Lee

Jeff, that's an understatement!

It's like the SEO Expert who tried to convince me that I would never rank on a set of targeted keywords unless I used BLs that were relevant and met a certain quality criteria that he laid out.

I sent him that video of Robert Wuhl and he got really perturbed.

No based on my own personal experience it doesn't make a substantial difference.

Focus on giving the search engines what they want on your site...highly targeted high quality content.

And get high quality related sites to link to you in some way.

That's what you should be focusing on.

Kindest regards,
Andrew Cavanagh

Who knows? I believe it may be a myth started by people who want to sell more years of web hosting in advance...
