A lot of questions pop up here concerning PageRank. Today, Matt Cutts posted a video on Google Webmaster Central's YouTube Channel addressing how PageRank updates work.

Wow! No disclaimer about how unreliable toolbar PR is?! Wasn't the explanation a lot different a few months back? It's still unreliable as a standalone measure that's forsure.

Tool bar PR doesn't update regularly, as matt cutts says 4 times a year. So in that way, what PR tool bar doesn't show the real update, thus you might get a rough idea but not the actual value. It's the actual PR that matters.

I actually got this video very interesting and helpful. I have found many people are confused about the page rank update and this video will be helpful for many people who are new to seo.

Thanks for posting that!

I think their cron job is broken though because near as I can tell, PR has not been updated since April! Than again, maybe the PR of all the pages I monitor has not changed since April.

I don't like him anymore...he wouldn't accept my friend request on facebook...

They seem.. contradictory. Just a few months ago it was, "PR will be removed from webmaster tools as we don't think it is a value anyone should be using anymore"

And now? No mention of inaccuracies or anything. I wonder what caused the change.

Maybe he thought that everyone got the point that Google doesn't like its own invention of PR and just didn't think he needed to harp on it? Or maybe they decided that until they have a better alternative that they're stuck? Either way, it doesn't really matter because PR or something like it will always exist to help us tell which links will be the most valuable over time.

Glad he spoke about PR, seems like we've been waiting for an update for quite some time now and the chorus of questions will only increase until the update occurs.

So why was PR removed from webmaster tools? Just as I thought google was stepping away from fuelling the PR obsessive madness some people have.

The Kudos that a site with a high PR had once a few year back in my opinion is on the way out,i would rather have a site with zero PR but visitors as in my mind its the visitors that are the life blood of any site,i will say that PR is good if you are either selling a site if it has a higher PR you can sell it for more and also if you are selling links you can also charge more for them.

Not really surprised at this. I mean yahoo has always had a PR9. They just haven't ever seemed to get to that PR10. Oh well, I'm sure they can keep trying. What would be funny is if google just went ahead and gave them a 0.
