Default Best percentages for different types of backlinks

Hi Guys and Girls

I am intending on using blog commenting, social bookmarking and forum profiles to build backlinks to my web 2.0 properties (articles and blogs), oh and a little bit of RSS submission, but mainly comments, bookmarks and profiles, but I was wondering roughly what kind of percentages should I do for each? I ask because I know the more natural the backlink profile looks the less likely Google is to penalise you. What sort of percentages do you think Google will think looks the most natural, any ideas?

Blog commenting ??? %
Social bookmarking ??? %
Forum profiles ??? %

1000 thanks.

If anyone could actually tell you percentages, they'd have all their sites at the top of the SERPs. The only one who knows is Google and it ain't telling. Remember, most of this is judged by software not by humans. Just get links and try to get an assortment of different ones.

And I doubt there would be any one set percentages anyway - that wouldn't be natural, now would it?

I appreciate I am asking something that no one knows for sure, but in fairness you could probably say that about the majority of questions asked here and a lot of SEO in general . Allow me to correct myself if I have expressed myself incorrectly, I am only asking what people “think”, in other words what’s their opinion, or if you like what would or do you do, I totally appreciate that no one probably knows for certain or is likely to be able to provide any evidence to prove what they say, but if we were only to discuss facts that people have the evidence to prove and even then there’s an element of subjective interpretation, then 90% of the content on this forum would probably not exist. Please don’t take this as me arguing with you, but I think it’s a perfectly valid topic to discuss and then after a number of different opinions maybe there will be some information of value and maybe not, just like every other post on any forum the reader will have to decide for themselves what they think of the views expressed. I apologise if this sounds argumentative, that’s really not my intention.

Obviously one would want to add an element of variation and not use the exact same percent to every property within your network, if you have an opinion on what that should be it would be interesting to know that too, but to have an idea of approximately what kind of range people think we might be looking at may really help.

So what would be or is your approach? What's your opinion? What ratios do you like?

Thanks again.

Default Re: Best percentages for different types of backlinks

I am sort of thinking that it might be best to have blog comment backlinks taking up the highest percentage, I was thinking something like this

Blog commenting 50%
Social bookmarking 20%
Forum profiles 30%

Oh and the rss will help to give a bit more diversity, I was going to use rssbot for that, the last submission I did successfully submitted to just over twenty sites, so depending on how many links I build to each property that will probably account for around 10% of backlinks or something like that, so it will probably be something like:

Blog commenting 46%
Social bookmarking 17%
Forum profiles 27%
Rss 10%

I totally appreciate these are fairly low quality backlinks, I mainly intend on using them to give my web 2.0 articles and blogs more authority, which I will then link either to each other (so some will have the odd link from other web 2.0 properties too) or back to my money site, thus funnelling all the link juice down, I will also use these techniques in moderation on my money site too just to give it a bit more link diversity. So my money site will have links from:

Article directories
Web 2.0 blogs
Blog commenting
Social bookmarking
Forum profiles
Rss
Directories (I will also give it a blast with directory bot)

Anyway that’s kind of how I am thinking of doing it, but would love to hear if any of you more experienced SEO’s think this plan can be improved.

Anyway thanks again

Any thoughts anyone? Sorry again if my defence of asking this question appeared a little belligerent, it’s just I think that it is something that anybody who uses these methods would benefit from researching further, been as Google does much prefer the more natural looking backlink profiles, like I say I appreciate no one knows for sure, but if anyone with experience has any ideas of the kind of ratios we might be looking at I would be extremely grateful, even if it’s just a guess.

Thanks again

There's no such thing as "best" percentages in the framework of your question. Backlinking percentages vary considerably across the landscape of pages on the Web. There's no real "magic" mix that can discerned through outside observation.

Don't forget video directories. The fasted way to be indexed by Google. And when you post something look for .edu and .gov blogs, they are highly valued by Google, so a link from any of this blogs has more value on you site.

But wouldn’t say

Blog commenting 50%
Social bookmarking 20%
Forum profiles 30%

Or

Blog commenting 30%
Social bookmarking 30%
Forum profiles 40%

Look more natural than say

Blog commenting 5%
Social bookmarking 90%
Forum profiles 5%

Or is there really likely to be no pattern what so ever for the kind of profile these kind of backlinks usually have when occurring naturally? Is it really that stupid a question?

Thanks

Hey

I do not prefer blog commenting more as it may mark your site as spam, due to massive commenting. Also, not many blogs with High PR are Do-Follow.

Therefore, I do forum profiles a lot, and have gained a lot from them. I try and do about 10 a week, and that gives me the best results.

Cheers Karan, thanks for the advice, no you are probably right too many blog comments probably can look a bit spammy, I was thinking of making these the highest percentage, but that may be a bad idea, then again all this methods can look pretty spammy I suppose, maybe the best way to do it is to do the most spammy least and the least spammy most. I suppose that is kind of what I am asking? How would you rate these three methods from the most spammy to the least spammy? In which order would you put them?

Again, it doesn't matter how we rate it. After all, it's Google that has to rank you. For me, a mix of PR's is more important than that of "types" of links.

BTW, if you overdo anything, it may look spammy.

Yes a varied profile of PR is another issue, but you know what I will be asking then, what kind of ratios look the most natural for this, LOL.

Steve, you might consider just looking at the backlinks of popular sites in your niche and determine THEIR ratio for yourself. This would then be the "natural" ratio for that keyword.

I do this all the time, especially when I find sites that I don't think should be ranking as well as they do. I just look through a few pages of their backlinks on Yahoo site explorer. It's not perfect - it isn't Google, but Google isn't providing a decent backlink snapshot. I just keep sort of a straw tally of types of links (forum, blog, blog comment, articles, obviously paid links etc.). These numbers vary quite a bit for different sites, but they REALLY vary across keywords.

For example, really techno-nerd articles/items will have a lot of social bookmarks and blog links (not blog comments). They don't tend to show many profile or other links. Same goes for a lot of the gossip sites, although I believe at least a couple of them appear to subscribe to a backlink service like Linkvana (why else would they have a bunch of 100 word blurbs on unrelated, plain blogs?).

A lot of biz-op type sites seem to have lots of profile links, some article links, and very few bookmarks/social stuff. And the really spammy sites will have hundreds or thousands of profile links and forum post links, likely Xrumer blasts.

Just my $0.02, except offered here for $0.00 (might be what it is worth).

Best Regards, Georgetta

The more that comes from niche related blogs will bring more results for the website as blogs are frequently updated and they index faster in the search engines, so it is better to build maximum links from the relevant blogs with high PR. Links from reputed social bookmarking sites like Digg and Delicious are also very useful.

I am a newbie, so far I got just 3 websites to the 1st page of google.

Id have to say above PR5 and above forum profiles, blog commenting and pinging those comments and profiles and submitting those rss, had the quickest movement to 1st page. = 70%

I got a monthly paid service for web 2.0, articles and social bookmarking those, they also had an effect but gradual and longer term. = 30%

my 2 cents experience.
