Does Comments hurt your SEO?

Hello,

I heard comments is good on your website for SEO but what I like to know is?

I get lots of spammy comments that I must approve first. If I approve a few spammy comments for content will this hurt my SEO?

I guess what I'm trying to figure out is, most comments all have links to another website but provide some good content.

What is a good comment versus a bad comment to help your own website rank high in google.

Thanks
Mike

If you have akisment activated than it will take care of all the spam comments for you.

I don't think approving all of those spam comments is a good idea.

Comments are good for SEO but I think they should be related to the post contents and most spam comments are not.

    Two potential issues:

    (1) having outgoing links from your site to "bad neighborhood" sites can hurt your site;

    (2) by allowing comments, you are messing with on-page SEO. I tailor my page for specific keywords, etc., and by allowing comments that would alter the structure I worked hard to create.

Personally, I never have comments. If I wanted a community, I would have just built a forum.

      Hey,

Thanks everyone, That's what I thought. I do use akisment but the spam still comes thru.

I do delete most all of them. That sure does answer my question. Your right Tom, I don't need a community.

      Thanks again

Good comment: One that provides value and does not use keyword in the name field

Bad comment: Provides little or no value. largely associated with keywords in name field

I installed the SI CAPTCHA Anti-Spam plugin

It's helped a lot. Totally worth it in my opinion.

If it's a spam comment, but includes a name and almost looks real, just edit it, take out any links and let it through, at least until you start getting regular comments from real people.

Proper comments do not harm ur site. Just make sure that they're genuine. Also i know that google likes sites that interact with their visitors as per Matt Cutts sayings. And comments is one way to interact with ur visitors.

Like Tom said it can and would hurt your site. To expand on that - who links to your site is out of your control and Google generally does not penalize you for links from a bad neighborhood but links from your site are under your control (you approve them) so it can and does hurt your site if you link to porn, spam sites, gambling , shady sites etc.

Google follows the social convention that reputable sites do not link to disreputable sites.

For the blogger, comment is must require for promoting his blog. Many blogger make there blog dofollow but they approve limited comments like the less spamming comments and one more thing is comment should be related to the post.

Normally the blogger never like to the comments like nice post, awesome post, thanks, very good etc. because this creates a bad impression in the mind of other readers.

I always approve the informative comments that help to make more interesting my posts.

Posting comments must be quality and related to the site. the content of the comment will be noticed by the visitors if they found out that its informative.

First comments should be relevant, approving all comments may have bad impact on SEO, because when some one spam he try to get hundreds of link from one post, mean out going links from your post increase. Also when you approve one spam comment than you will start getting thousand more spam comments, as link builders are hungry of backlinks.
