Hi everyone, I am making a new site so i will redirect the links from the old site to the new one. The problem is that the old site has some categories that the new won´t have. I rather not say them, but here is an example: Lets suppose i have a site that sells all kind of cloth and shoes. Now in the new site i want to target only shoes and forget about the rest. Problem is that i got lots of link to the category "hat". Is it ok to 301 redirect does non relevant links to the main page of the new site? Or will that hurt the ranking for the keywords that i want for the new site? thanks in advance |

It's always better not to redirect unrelated links. You can apply for a domain change through Google webmaster tools.

It will be the same domain, but i will change the the category system. I have hundreds of those unrelated links, and about 40-50 of them have PR1+. So is it better to send them to trash? |

Yes, you must 301 redirect each of your old page to the new one. If you do not have a corresponding page in the new site, you might choose the best suitable page referring the old one, or redirect to the home page.

If the page is similar to your new one, 301 redirect it. If not, don't. The rules are pretty clear in Google's guidelines.

| They are target with different keywords. and one of those keyword won´t be in the new site. thing is that it is hard to send to the trash a 3 keywords that are in the first page of google.

Thats if you still want to keep it as its still at 1st page in google? If you use wordpress use the ordered menu I think its in the tools section this way you can create what shows up in your navigation. so if you get a new domain for that category you can exclude the category from your navigation ( wont delete the permalink from google serps because its being used for redirection) and then use 301 to direct that catergorys backlinks to the new domain and still have your website but without the category showing up for people to see. its worked for me
