SEO Question: Images and Navigation Menus

Hi

Just a quickie - I have built a new Zen Cart based site and at the moment my navigation bars at the top of the page are image based (rollovers). Sometime in the future I will see if I can get to grips with CSS and convert them to be text based rather than images.

I have attached an image of my nav bar if it helps to answer my questions

For now, what is the best way to name these for SEO purposes. if I name the images something relevant should I also add ALT tags? Is it very likely that the benefits of adding ALT tags will outweigh the fact that they won't look too great as they will appear on top of the menus.

Also, should the ALT tags (if used), be different to the image file name or the same/similar?

Any other relevant advice would of course be welcomed

Many thanks in advance

Phil

    Hi Phil,

Had a quick look at your nav. Don't worry too much about the image name. Focus on the destination URL of the button and use the keywords that you have using to optimise the destination URL in your ALT tags.

For instance, FREE DELIVERY button, forget about optimising free delivery on its own without a product name. People don't serch for FREE DELIVERY by itself. At every opportunity I would try to include your generic product name eg FREE DELIVERY Black shoes NOT Lloyds shoes.

    Hope this helps
    Cheers
    Jeremy
