Default Cross Linking Question

Ok so Cross-linking occurs when site A links to site B, site B links to site C and site C links back to site A.

So if my squidoo article is linked to my homepage and my homepage has a link to my facebook page that has a link to my squidoo article, I can be penalized?

Im just making sure I understand..

How do you avoid this?
So if im working for a company its best to maybe make a few different pen names and create the accounts from different i.p.'s?

Just make sure that each page is related. The easiest way to tell is ask yourself - does the page I am linking to help my reader? Don't make a habit of it, either.

I would personally link squidoo to home, facebook to home, and facebook to squidoo. It now makes the homepage the central property.

You are never going to be penalised for creating links, you just have to look at what your best use of time is.

Facebook is great on the outer rim of your link hub because it doesn't accumulate relevancy for keywords, but it can drive traffic. Squidoo and hubpages are better on the second level because they can build pagerank and they need traffic to get more traffic.

They don't have to be related. You can do a little link washing back
and forth. That's why people kill to get their links in sigs here.

I don't know why the biggest secret in linking seems to be to link to
and from your own sites.

I don't think facebook is even seen as a link. How come no mention
of twitter? At least that is seen as a real "link."

No worries here, that is an obscure 3 way link, it will have full link value it is nowhere near a recipricol link (site A links to site B and site B links back to site A)
