$1 Million Dollar SEO Contest?

My company is about to launch an SEO competition with a $1 Million cash first prize. I'm looking for any expert advice. Is it a good idea (would many SEO marketers be interested)

I think if something like this fairydust/mythical competition were to ever take place it would be our duty as members of Backlinksforum to comprise a team of 5 or 10 people to just completely obliterate it and afterwards split the money.

Doing something like this would be the quickest way to document for google all the kinds of techniques they should discount from providing link juice. Good for the winner, terrible for every other SEO.

I'm pretty sure Google knows all the link building practices out there. They wouldn't learn anything from it, IMHO.

This might be a good idea. Perhaps instead of the price at 1 million, it could be 100,000$ and for people to enter, they have to pay a sum. Of course, the organisers would need to make $1 million from running the event.

We are a diamond jewelry company and the contest is scheduled to be launched in 3 weeks. The contest will last 1 year and the winner will be the #1 spot on Google for the keyphrase we decide. The prize money is real and is funded as part of our marketing budget.

I think that if you team up, you may do better in the contest, but be sure to expect serious competition from a large number of SEMs and SEO agencies... don't you think?

Do any of you guys manage/own SEO or marketing blogs? We are also looking for collaborations for press and distribution.

So you will buy the site, from whoever is ranking #1 in the SERPs for your keyword?

Why would you pay $1m to get to #1?

Edit: Hang on, I sort of know the answer to that. What I mean is why wouldn't you just go to the best SEO company and ask them to get you to #1? Wouldn't that cost you less?

Competitions are a great way to generate exposure and with a competition like this, they would be able to cherry pick out of a lot of great SEO companies and choose one that they like and that will be able to provide them with the best service.

I'm still a bit skeptical of a prize of that magnitude.

It won't be getting their site to rank. It will be a competition for the #1 spot for a certain keyword I would imagine. And I guess it would be last one standing after a year was the winner.

But, this seems a bit more mythical than anything else.

My guess is he takes 10 different people or teams, gives 10 different sites that are an affiliate for diamonds, then literally owns the top 10 positions for diamonds, and makes his money back and more over the course of a year...or less. Risky investment, but could pay off. Must have some good research into how many diamonds are being sold. If it was for one site, how do you determine the winner of all the contest entrants?
