Default 301ing an old domain to a new domain

If I 301 an old domain to a newly registered domain, will this then pass on the SEO juice of each link to the new domain and have it rising through the SERP's as the new domain being displayed?

Excuse my ignorance but I don't understand how this works and wouldn't it still effect the new domain and have it possibly sandboxed if I am building a large number of links?

Do I then need to create forwarding URL's on the old domain that point to specific URL's on the new domain?

Any help and explanations would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

I know 301 and 302 are used to redirect the url of the old to get it goodwill to new domain. But it is not search engine friendly methods.
