What jargon in particular do you mean? It's tough to explain without using certain terms that are specific to the subject.

thanks for your replies. Laura B - it all seems like jargon to me. When I've done the KW research how / where do I use it. Again thanks. |

-Think of keywords or phrases -Type them into the Google keyword selection tool -Find descriptive ones that fit your subject and that have a decent amount of traffic, roughly 5000 hit/mth -Type that same keyword into Google and see if you can find one that has less than one million competing pages. -Optimize you content by using the keywords that fit that profile in you title, headings and copy -submit to search engines Opinions vary, but that is it in a nutshell... |

You use your key words in URLs. You use your key words in articles. Headlines, subject lines and anywhere a Search Engine might "look" so that it can serve up your page to someone searching for your key words. Having said that, it just dawned on me that this thread will be moved to the SEO Forum, SEO is "jargon" for Search Engine Optimization and that is the purpose of Key Word Research. George Wright |

Once you have a list of keywords with good search traffic but relatively low competition, use them throughout your site. If you have a Wordpress blog, for instance, take two or three related keywords and write a post using them. Do the same for another small group of keywords. That way when people use those terms to search (and they will, because that's what your keyword research revealed), the pages on your site that use those terms will come up in the list of results. Not at the top right away, of course, but the goal is to move up the SERPs (search engine results pages) little by little as you improve your ranking by getting backlinks, putting good content on your site, promoting in other ways, etc. You may know all that - sorry if I'm talking down to you - sometimes it's hard to tell where a person is coming from. |

At the very basic level, keyword research is what you do when determining what keywords people are searching for in your industry. For example, if you sell say "aftermaket car parts" you'd want to come up with a list off the top of your head of potential words that people might search for. Doesn't have to be long because most of the tools will expand this list for you. So a quick brainstorm might come up with aftermarket intakes aftermarket spark plugs etc. You then take your list and put it into a keyword research tool. There are plenty of free ones if you're just getting started. The most obvious is Google's: type "keyword tool" into google to get the link. Put your keyword list in there, and it will generate a list of similar keywords, but more importantly, it will show you: -How many times people search for it / month -How competitive it is (how many advertisers bid on that word) -Month by month trends on search volume -Average Cost per Click (How much advertisers spend to have someone click on their ad for that keyword) This is really basic info and doesn't even scratch the surface, but I would definitely recommend bouncing around the forums and looking for information. You can get pretty educated in a couple days. You can waste a lot of money on ads if you don't know what you're doing. Good luck Good luck |

Pretend you were going to bake a cake. Pretend you looked in your cupboard, and you saw you had chocolate to make the cake. So, you want to make a chocolate cake of some kind. You have some other ingredients too - but not sure which ones you have will be needed for the cake. What are you going to type into the google search bar to find the best recipe based on the ingredients you have in your cupboard??? |

...also my assumption was you were looking at keyword research for pay per click. If it's for search optimization, there's a whole lot to learn before you tackle it on you're own. And to echo Laura B, not trying to talk down |

Very simply you want to find words that are searched on a fair amount, are relevant to your niche, and do not have a lot of competition.

Stuart, You know when a new movie comes out, or Apple releases a new gadget, or the hottest new act is coming to town, and people line up for blocks to get tickets, or camp out to secure a place in line so they can see it or get it? Well, keyword research is a lot like driving around the block to see: A. How many people want it, and B. How far around that block you'll start from if you decide to get in on the action, as well. What it won't tell you is how fast the line moves... ![]() ~Bill |

| When somebody is looking for information in Google, Yahoo and other, they type some words in the browser, expecting to get results that match their request. The search engine will start looking for websites that have certain words known as keywords, and that are the same or similar as the ones typed by the person that is requesting the search. When you create a website, and you want people to visit it, you have de decide what will be the keywords that your website have. Because of that, it is better that before you create your website, you make an investigation about words that might be related to the theme of your website. (This is called relevancy). Once you have done it, you will have to use some programs to see if the keywords that have being chosen, have enough daily or monthly searches to assure you that you will have sufficient visitors, and how many websites are competing with your website. I would recommend you make a search on “Google Adwords keyword tool”, which is a free and very good software to find keywords and the number of searches. You can also look for the free version of Market Samurai which is a bit more complex, but will give you more information. |

| Senior Warrior Member War Room Member | First you'll need to compile a list of keywords that you like to use in your writing. Or, if you've already written your content or articles, you will need to create a list of the keywords you've already used to perform keyword research on those words or phrases. To make your keyword research easier, open up a new document in your favorite word processing document and list each keyword or phrase, one on each line. Leave room to keep track of the results you get from your keyword research on each line. First go to https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal and enter your keyword or phrase into the keyword tool. There is a small box under the phrase, "Enter one keyword or phrase per line." Right now, you only want to enter one keyword at a time to receive the best results while doing your keyword research. Enter your keyword or phrase into the box, and click "keyword ideas." Once you've received a list of results, you'll want to add an additional column to the keyword tool's results list for keyword research purposes. You can find a drop-down menu for data columns at the top, right-hand side of the list of results. Click and scroll down to "Show Estimated CPC Average." This will show the average estimated cost per click for the keyword or phrase you are researching, which will help you determine the average amount of money you can expect to earn for that ad. I understand the part on looking up google for less than 1 million competing pages so that its easier to compete on the search results. But why only restrict to keywords having roughly 5000 hit/month? I thought we should be looking at popular keywords with as high hit rate as possible? | |

| Basically KW’s research is analyzing different trends in search activity. Which keyword is more popular, which one is more difficult to promote, etc. |

| In summary, to translate it into technical terms will be to find the most popular keywords (highest search traffic) with lowest competition (should be able to turn up in google top 10 search for the keyword) ?
